It didn't look like it would be this great but it was! Actually one of our top two places in town. Loved every bite!

I saw so many good reviews about this place that I had to check it out and I am so glad that I did! Seating is limited so you will need to make a reservation and you will be seated with other people but in my opinion, that adds to the charm. The dishes were simple yet so wonderful. We... More

We loved this small restaurant that is very popular with locals. A reservation is a must. The steak and the chicken dishes were fantastic and the rapini was the best I've ever had.

I made my first trip to Florence in 1990 with my new husband and he took me to Sostanza. He had always LOVED the place. After going with him I could understand. Not easy to find down a little side street, nothing special about the look of the place for sure, but oh, the food. Delicious steak ( cut right... More

This place has a lot of history & has been visited by many people over the years as you can see from the old pictures on the walls. If you want traditional food with friendly service this is a excellent place to go. It is not fancy at all & they seat people together at the tables when they serve... More

We finally made it to Sostanza this December and the food and service were fantastic! We licked the plates clean off the artichoke omelette, butter chicken, beans in oil, and radicchio salad. We drank the last drop of the house red, and dipped cantucci into vin santo for dessert. We walked out of the restaurant knowing that, if we make... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
