The Café zum Roten Engel is located in an inner-courtyard close to the Markplatz. There are a lot of seats on the cobblestone courtyard and most seats have little throw blankets for customers. Inside, the seating is mostly old wooden tables and chairs and huge windows allowing in lots of natural lighting. Once you enter, you need to take a... More

Nice and quite place for a quick place and coffee. Quite romantic with its lovely little square in the middle. Quite a local point of meeting

A lovely little square off the main center. A place to stop, have a drink, a bit to eat. Sometimes people are playing music. A place locals go on a Sunday.

We visited there while walking on Altstadt's streets. Nice live music sound came from in front of it. I guess it is student cafe because everybody was sitting with their notes. You should buy your order from inside and took your dished again to inside

I stopped here with a couple friends for coffee and cake during an afternoon walk in the old part of town. The cobblestone square is quiet and charming--you can hear birds singing, as well as the buzz of your fellow patrons' conversations, many of whom will be quietly playing chess. My wife marveled at the tea selection but I had... More

I went with four friends to this place. Staff was friendly and place had a nice atmosphere. Bier was really good. Some of us also wanted to eat but there were not many options. We took some vegetarian dish with bean, cheese and other vegetables. It wasn't special but served the purpose to have food before we started to drink.... More

I'm sure this would be lovely Spring/summer. Cobbled courtyard setting. We just stopped for a drink. It's self service. You go in, order your drink and carry it out if you want to sit outside. Blankets supplied for the cold days.

This was a favourite place of mine to go, to get away from the busy streets and traffic, it's part of the Old Town, in a little square with a fountain and lovely trees. The birds there are plentiful and very tame, they will eat from your hand. It's also reasonable enough for a drink.

Slowly does it. Very laid back atmosphere, small menu, popular with the locals. The English speaking fondly call it The Rotten Angel.

Had to search for the serving staff, which had disappeared. Draft beer very light and tasteless, 2dl for CHF 4. 2dl house wine for CHF 8. Nothing special. The old courtyard makes up though for service and quality. Atmosphere among customers is easygoing and laid back.
