We called in to this place on a Saturday night for a quick drink after passing it on a earlier canal cruise and it being close to our hotel. The building itself leans which adds to its character. The pub was very busy which is to expected on a Saturday night and seemed to have a good vibe.

I stumbled across this place with friends in Amsterdam and was drawn in by its character and leaning presence in an otherwise quiet area. We didn't stop for food, only a quiet drink or two after feeling a little worse for wear from the previous night but the beer selection was great and the place was very quirky with great... More

Café de Sluyswacht is a neat little bar at Jodenbreestraat just across from Rembrandt's House. This historic building dates back to 1695 and was a lockhouse in centuries past. Today, the detached a crocked little house serves as a two story bar where you can enjoy a drink and bite to eat. Opening hours are 12.30pm to late (Mon to... More

Good choice of beers and nice toasties. Great for a light lunch, sitting outside watching the canal traffic go past.

The best thing about this place is its location on the loch where a constant street of boats go by. It is immediately recognisable being the 1695 loch gate house that is now on a lean. A drinking house that can't stand straight...... The food is ordinary. The drinks are standard and yes while we were there a noisy hens... More

Saw this fantastic building whilst on one of the Canal cruises. It looked really good, so we went out of our way to find it. Not an easy process when you don't know what it is called or where it really is. We eventually got there and; The best terrace was shut. The bar was closing early. There was a... More

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
