This place is delightful. Small but comfortable with an excellent and attentive wait staff, open kitchen, and GREAT food (fresh, local, prepared with finesse). Prix fixe for me included 5 small appetizers (fish, pickled yellow beet with fennel, a tiny onion tart, etc.), swordfish steak and amazing desert -- but it likely changes often. Highly recommend.

We stumbled upon this restaurant during a pre-trip internet search. What a wonderful restaurant - farm-to-table type with set menus each week. When we were there, the two entree choices were beef and swordfish. Delicious appetizers and dessert, too. Great!

Our dinner at Balthazar's Keuken was one of those events where the people, the place and food all work together in concert to deliver a feast for the senses. The restaurant is located in a restored coach house, with exposed brick walls and an open kitchen. The tables are placed close together, allowing a some friendly exchanges with other guests.... Unique small restaurant. The charming lady who greeted us was the owner - and also the chef. There is a fixed menu, so you get a starter which on our visit consisted of six different portions including mussels, vegetables and meats. There is a choice of mains - meat or fish! Our choice was lamb or langoustines -we both chose... More

Amsterdam is not known at all as a culinary city, right so But this restaurant contributes to the better list, small relax atmosphere but the food was very good, and better No menu to choose from, so you must be open to try new things The starter of 5 different small dishes was good, we choosed the meet options for... This small restaurant (about 30 seats) is located in the charming part of Amsterdam called Jordaan. You can't find the menu beforehand on the Internet; the chefs compose the night's dinner depending on what is available. All very good, well prefared in a cosy surrounding, you can get a 3 course for just € 32,50. So if you are able... More

Avoid at all costs. So many better restaurants in Amsterdam. Lazy, careless, thoughtless. Non fussed staff. Boring starter platter of cold leftovers. Main courses that don't work. (Prawns with sauerkraut?!) If you only have 2 options make sure they are both good! Didn't even apologise about a rotten potatoe. Thoroughly disappointing.

Having dinner at Balthazar is always a good experience: nice atmosphere, good service and excellent food. The menu always offers tasty surprises, inspired by very diverse european recipes. Highly recommended.

Went with a group last minute (no reservations) and luckily we were seated. The restaurant filled up very quickly after we arrived. Although it is small, close and loud, I liked that it felt as if you were seated in someone's house. The kitchen was open and you could see all the food being prepared. We had 5 mini plates... More

The food was delicious, the house white inexpensive and tasty. Great cocktail to start and all very good value. This was my favourite restaurant visited in Amsterdam! The only think I would say is that we got very lucky in our table which wasn't next to any others and we wanted a quiet meal together but it seemed that lots... More

Balthazars Keuken restaurant in the heart of the Jordaan district is one of Amsterdam's most special restaurants. It is a long, narrow space set in a former smithy, with scrubbed wooden floors, an open kitchen with pans and utensils hanging in plain view. The moss-coloured banquettes, unadorned wooden seating, and plain white table linens add to the ambience of simplicity and relaxation. And it's tiny, seating just about 30 inside and a few more on the bijou terrace in fine weather. 'Romantic' must be Balthazar's middle name, in spite of the plain surroundings. Owners Karen Gaasterland and Alain Parry create internationally-inflected three-course fixed-price dinners, with a menu that changes every week. They create. You enjoy. No choice about the dishes, though. The starters are tidbits meant to appeal to all. The mains are perfectly-sourced fish or meat with sides. House wine is from the Languedoc, chosen to complement the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Dinner and lunch from Wednesday through Saturday. Groups up to ten can dine in the restaurant then, or hire the entire venue for private events during the rest of the week. Very popular, very packed.

Staying in Jordaan

Neighbourhood Profile
One of Amsterdam’s most preferred outdoor markets and some of the city’s favorite watering holes are but two of the many reasons to save ample time for a stroll through this especially convivial warren of narrow streets with its unfair share of quirky shops and quality galleries. Historically a haven for the working class and emigrants, these days the Jordaan is better known as an enclave for artists and designers. As popular as the Jordaan is as a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, the area never feels particularly touristy or overrun with outsiders. A highlight even for long-time Jordaan residents, be sure to accept any invitation to step within one of the area’s beloved courtyards or to have a sneak peek inside one of its many working studios.
