An unexpected bonus - help yourself lunchtime buffet. We had been driving along the coast looking for somewhere to eat and remembered this place had been recommended by our host. It doesn't look special but is popular with locals (always a good sign). We had...something meaty and something fishy, both goodMore

N38°31,421' W28°39,552' Outside Horta on the way to the airport, Restaurant Ponta Furada does not cater for tourist. It is a large place, considering the oversized parking lot, with inside tables with nice tablecloth and the compulsory enormous flat television screen so that football can...overrule the sensory experiences of a good meal. In August 2016, we were to odd duck in their pond. The menu may not impressive, beside their honest and low prices, but staff members know their food and preparation. The waiter knew a lot about every species of fish from the well-known Consumer’s Guide to Azorean Seafood. Before ordering, we were shown the donor of our meal: a fresh almaco jack. Other choices are stocked in the deep freeze. While the restaurant filled up with local, we enjoyed the almaco jack. The meat and bones separated nicely. Very well prepared. Nice flavour and texture. On advice of the waiter, we ordered a bottle of white wine, which failed the initial tasting. We returned this wine and as alternative, we ordered the well-known local white wine from Pico: Frei Gigante Superior 2015 for €10, 50. Unfortunately, a glass of the returned wine was put on the bill. We finished with a biscuit pudding and an almond pudding both for €6. Very nice. The service was impressive (beside the glass of wine on the bill), the interior and tablecloths, (beside the large flat screen television), were nice and the food was great and not expressive. Do not forget you need a taxi to get back to Ponta Delgada. Very recommended.More
