We had quite a night at Sr Fado's. Food was terrific--especially the pork stew, which was incredible. Music was incredible. We especially loved bluesy-Nadja, the daughter. Be forewarned, though: dinner will run until nearly 11 PM, with the music starting then. Evening won't end until at least 1:30 AM, if then. So be prepared: take a nap.

Enjoyed the music more than the food to be honest. Amazing kid on Portugese guitar, and mother/ daughter sing beautifully. Other singers are impressive too, but don't expect to understand the lyrics if not Portugese. Food is catalpana or pork with rice.

For all Fado lovers, this typical family restaurant offers an insightful trip into the Portuguese cuisine & soul. It was great to listen various fado singers giving voice to so many different feelings, but mostly expressing their love for "bonita Lisboa". And the seafood Cataplana was absolutely delicious! Thank you, Ana Marina & Duarte!

This was one of the highlights of our recent 21 day trip from Rome to LIsbon. We got to see and experience many things along the way, but this evening at SR Fado was a standout for many reasons. Duarte and Anna are the sort of people who invest their souls in what they are doing and it pays off... More

First let me say what Sr Fado is not - a nightclub restaurant with an extensive menu and bar. What it is is a warm, inviting, cozy, dining room that accommodates 22 people only. And after a delicious, home cooked, rustic stew dinner, with wine if you wish, you are entertained by your waiter and waitress ( father Duarte and... More

Viewed from the street this little gem of a restaurant do not look that special. However when you enter and is welcomed by the owner you start to realise that you are going to experience something extraordinary. Unlike many other fado restaurants Sr Fado gives you a feeling of being a guest in the owners home. There is only room... More

This was a unique experience- a family, who perform all functions in this restaurant - They serve, cook, sing and play. They make you feel as part of the family throughout the whole evening. They make time to get to know you individually. The food is delicious, the fado is beautiful and the singing just goes on and on as... More

The special atmosphere of this tiny family run fado restaurant is well worth a visit. You may come as a guest but you will leave as a friend. The total price covers a good meal, wine and water (and we did get a second bottle free) a lot of fado history, different fado songs, a little bit of sing a... More

This tiny restaurant is a well of hospitalty, comfortable like home and honest food place to be. The family Santos makes you feel like home even you are the first time around. What you see is what you get. The seafood is well prepared and pure of taste and flavour. Around 11 pm the restaurant is about to change to... More

Our experience did not live up to the glowing reviews we had read by other travellers. There was only one red wine on offer for €30 although the menu alluded to several selections in the cellar. The food was average and not restaurant standard. Marina let the audience know that she is a renowned singer in Portugal, however the singing... More

TA says it has guidelines, but keeps the false opinions of breath, even with the defense tentavivas by the owners! Ana Marina not smoking and that person says that singing reflects heavy smoking! Slander! this person says that red wine of the house has just 30 €. LIE! some comments from other travelers say clearly that we have a menu... More

Description
On off the least pretentious of Lisbon's Fado restaurants is also one of its finest. Hosts Duarte Santos and Ana Marina treat guests as family and the homely ambiance is warming and inviting. The homemade gastronomy is noted for its textures and flavours and generous portions, with the seafood cataplana (stew) a much-lauded feast. The menu is limited, but here it's all about the quality of the food. As for the entertainment, this is local fado at its most authentic -- the singers and musicians have known each other for years, and the performance is heartfelt and genuine. Quite often, diners are invited to join in which makes the evening truly memorable.

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
