My wife and I together with friends decided to visit Lisbon for the first time as a break from our Northeast US winter. This was our first visit to Portugal and my wife and I also wanted to take the opportunity to experience and learn...about Portugese wines ----as we are big wine lovers. We separated from our friends for three wine related experiences during this short trip to Lisbon. Our first experience at the highly rated Nova Wine Bar ( as detaied in a separate review ) was a disappointment. But our experience at the BA Wine Bar was one of most interesting in Europe. BA is a very small( ~ 16 seats) and simple traditional wine bar with Portuguese tapas of artisan cheese and/or black pig fine charcuterie .Their simple and yet diversified food offer is designed to enhance your wine experience, including different sized mix platers of cold cut meats, cheeses, olive oils and jams/dips. So here the real focus is on the wine and a passionate owner who made the evening a truly unique experience trying different Portugese wines. He took time to understand our wine preferences and price range while engaging into an interesting converation of each wine. The interaction was great. We had him select each new wine as we discussed our thoughts about the prior wines tasted. Other wine bars were too commercial , had short wine list selections and more focused on the food menuMore

The individualized attention was absolutely wonderful. Staff stayed transparent and tactful about prices without my asking, and offered extensive tastings. Everyone working there checked in repeatedly to make sure I was enjoying everything, seamlessly switching through half a dozen languages for each table. The best...seasoning for food is words! I enjoyed everything so much more for the stories that were served along with the wine, and I am so glad that I came here for my introduction to Portuguese wine. There is a true passion here for the wine and for the customer. Small space—reservations are a must to avoid uncertainty at the door, and you want to be certain you’ll be able to spend some time here. It’s a good idea to come thirsty but not hungry. We were very pleased to be able to book a table to come here with a view to sampling some Portuguese wines. We ordered hams, sausages and cheeses, and some cod in garlic, and the food was absolutely delicious. We had visions of sampling several...different wines to accompany the food, but this didn't really materialise. Although there is no doubt the host is passionate about wine, and has vast knowledge, we felt this was to the detriment of the tasting. We ordered a glass of wine each before we ordered the food, and then had about a half hour wait after finishing that wine before anyone came to see if we wanted anything further, so we were essentially sitting at the table without anything to eat of drink. GIven the in depth 'lecture' style approach when trying to order wine, we plumped for a bottle between us that we could enjoy without interuption. This was very nice (overpriced however, as charged at 40 euros and could be bought elsewhere for 16). It wasn't a bad evening, but frustrating as we wanted to try a range of wines, but the service didn't permit this.More

Recommended to us by a relative. Booked online. Was only a short walk from our hotel. The experience, atmosphere, food and wine were all great. We had no real knowledge of Portuguese wine so were keen to be advised. We tasted several and settled on...glasses of 3 different reds and my husband finished with a port. We found the owner friendly and informative without being pushy or rushing us. He genuinely wants you to find a wine you enjoy. We had Tapas to accompany our wine, selection cheeses, hams and grilled sausages. All were delicious and explained by helpful and informative chef. Would recommend to anyone who wants to discover genuine Portuguese wines and all Tapas was Portuguese sourced. There is a wide range of cost for all pockets which is laid out clearly on the menu, many less than a glass of house red would cost in a restaurant. There is no pressure to increase your budget. As other reviews have stated, this is an experience as opposed to a traditional dinner. It's all about the wine. I felt welcomed as a solo traveler and was asked what kinds of wine I like. I was then given two options for each wine...I ordered. There was a lot of personal attention from the owner and his wife and they were in no rush to have me leave. In fact, the owner told me to "drink slowly." The cheeses, meats and spreads were local and delicious. It was enough for dinner, but they don't have many cooked options on the menu. The perfect place if to are interested in drinking portwine and Portugese wines. You can have a cheese platter or a platter with charcuteries that the staff will tweak to go with whatever wines you are in the mood for. They also have a sizeable...list of sardines. I recommend the place and its knowledgeable staff. They warn you when you get inside that service maybe slow and that they have no food. Nevertheless, people keep coming inside. It’s not for everyone, but definitely for a #winelover.More
