We were in Lisbon on a wet early December Thursday. Looking for a place to eat a quick authentic lunch and stumbled upon this place close to the Santa Justa Elevator. Waitress couldn't have been friendlier or more welcoming even moving us to a table further from the door to avoid the draught. The cafe is in the front with... More

You walk in one of the busiest streets of Lisbon trying to figure out where to eat. It's Sunday, this is closed, that one is closed, also the one in the corner is closed. Damn, nothing open and in 4 hours you have an airplane to catch. OK, let's go to this Casa Chinesa, people like it on TripAdvisor... and... More

Found this place just walking down the road. Great desserts. Staff was very friendly and worked hard to make our sampling of local Lisbon desserts. The Pingos Tocha is a must for everyone. So good even though it looks a little weird.

We had a great local Portuguese dinner in Baixa section of the old town in Lisbon . Our waitress wAs very nice too . Dinner with wine and soup was 62 euro for 5 people! The reason it is called Chinese house, is because it used to be a Chinese item store one hundred years ago.

We just happened to be walking by and decided to stop in for a snack. We were glad we did. We were a little unsure of what to get, but decided to try the pastel de nata, a sort of creamy egg-based custard tart with lemon, vanilla and cinnamon. Besides being good, they are not very expensive either. We stopped... More

Very central, and a quarter of the price of some similar local places. Grilled chicken very good, house wine excellent by the carafe. Very obviously family-run. Doesn't look much from the outside. A happy accident.

Have been here a few times now for breakfast, lunch and to takeaway some of their lovely cakes. Always made to feel welcome by the staff who make sure all of their customers get attention no matter how busy it is. Menu of the day yesterday was fresh papaya and pineapple juice with a delicious toasted sandwich of chicken and... More

Found this place by accident. We wanted to visit the Elevador Santa Justa, which was unfortunately closed at the time we went, so we had breakfast across the street at Casa Chinesa (sign on the window is Folar de Chaves). Dizzying array of local pastries. Great cappuccino. Very easy on the pocket.

A good restaurant close to Baixa Chiado metro serving a varied lunch menu. Basic Portuguese dishes but very reasonably priced as along a back street. This is the place we have lunch every time we visit Lisbon. Restaurant runs between two streets and serves coffee, cakes etc. at the front part. Lively and quick service. Lunch for 4 about 35-40... Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
