We took Rick Steves advice and followed the plan he lays out in his Lisbon travel guide. Start with the lowest cost white port and work your way up the ladder. The Instituto is run by the government and showcases port from, of course, Portugal. You may have to be assertive to get the waiters attention. Appetizers are extra but... More

Went to this place to try some porto. There were no other guests. The choice of wines is good but the two gentlemen serving the whole place were, well, sort of busy or better simply not present at all. Asking for a recommendation for a "fine sweet port" was: "They're all sweet". Well done. However prices and and interior are... More

This has all the best opportunities to be a perfect place to learn about and enjoy port wine in Lisbon. So it is a real shame that the staff is so so unengaged in what they are selling. They just hand out the Menu, and if you ask them anything the answer is "It's in the menu" . We had... More

If you get a kick out of literally being screamed at by obnoxious waiters, this is the place to go in Lisbon. My wife, our 10-year old daughter and myself wanted to drop in for a glass or two of port. Alreadys from afar, the headwaiter was waving his hands and shouted: "Completo, completo!", no place available. When we asked... More

This is a great and inexpensive place to try the best port of Portugal. They offer a huge variety of wines and beer/non alcoholic drinks for the non wine drinkers. They also sell bottles that you can take home. We went to this place twice and the service was ok (ish) the first time and great the second time.

Outside the building you do not expext such a cosy sitting-room, where you can taste delicious port! The entrance is free. You can taste several types of port and it is not very expensive. The cheapest glass starts from 1.50 euro. It is only a pitty that the waiters are so very old and so very grumpy. It should be... More

If you want to try many different ports, this is the place. It's like entering a library, very quiet. You'll be handed a booklet when you sit, and you can browse and select what appeals to you. Don't expect a recommendation though. They aren't helpful that way.

We went to this "port library" twice during our visit to Lisbon. We understood that the Institute is run by the Portuguese Government to support the port producers, which obviously helps the country's economy. The facility is quiet and has comfortable chairs and sofas to sit on. You are given a menu of over 100 choices of Port and can... More

Had friends who loved this place but I don't get it. Not a great selection of ports (only 1-3 over 15 years old) and not the best port houses (though I understand marketing local houses rather than Warre, Taylor, etc.). Decor was "old English library" stuffy - not the place you could laugh with friends. Staff was obviously bored and... More
