Stamatopoulos is a lovely restaurant to visit if you like to try a variety of Greek dishes and wines in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We often went there for a 'late lunch' when most people had finished - we were usually tired, hot and hungry! They were very helpful finding us a table in the shade (even when they... More

We had a delucious lunch, with traditional Greek food - mousaka, souvlaki, kebab - and we enjoyed every bite. The atmosphere was pleasant and the waiters really fine.

We intended to have our last dinner in Athens at another restaurant which unfortunately was closed. Instead we ended up here, despite the live music being played to attract the punters. We were assigned a table outside and were promptly served. We chose meat balls, aubergine salad, olives and stuffed mushrooms for starters followed by roasted lamb with potatoes and... More

Sharing a seafood platter, grilled eggplant with goat cheese and a salad, we enjoyed the traditional atmosphere of a truely Greek tavern. Service was friendly, the music enjoyable and the atmosphere enjoyable. Tables are set under umbrellas, or in the sun at different levels across the medium sized Resturant. A lovely place to enjoy the old city.

Went here twice, late in the evening in early spring. Pleased to notice the Greeks were the vast majority of customers. The place is authentic. The food and drink we had was fine. Not exceptional, but good enough. The real attraction is the music and dancing. Can certainly recommend this place, just don't know if it remains good in the... More

We followed the hotel receptionist recommendation which was a great one. The tavern provides excellent food together with live music.

Traditional location with good live music. Too dark to eat and to ser ehat you're eating. Nothing special in general. Souvlaki expensive (16euros) and poor (5 lamb small rondels) with no dip or pita bread. Generally expensive for a taverna.

Staying in Plaka

Neighbourhood Profile
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
