On a glorious Day in June I found fish & chips on a par with typical West & North Yorkshire Chippies, (without doubt the best counties for fried fish & chips) my wife & me each chose medium sized cods (which in most chippies would...More

We drove to Slapton for a visit and stumbled across the Start Bay Inn. Stopped for a drink on a sunny warm day, ordered lunch. The crab sandwich at £8.50 was full of crab meat accompanied by a substantial salad garnish, the coleslaw and jacket...More

We had a great meal here, even on a busy sunny Sunday afternoon. The deserts were amazing and so big we had to take a doggy bag home !

went for birthday dinner on arrival in area. not disappointed. The Pub is old style and mad busy most of the time and the reason is the excellent quality fish used.

Busy constantly which says a lot. If you like fresh fish cooked perfectly with no frills this is for you. One day we saw the fish arrive, watched it filleted and then a few minutes later ate it. Great sea side experience. The Turbot was...More

We stayed outside and all those with dogs did so too. If you want to be inside there are other options in the area

Do you have full disabled access? Is all your fish and sea food from sustainable sources? Do you allow children and or well behaved dogs?

Others replies probably cover the issues raised well enough. I would only add that I would not consider the Inn as providing fully accessible service for the disabled especially as there are internal steps from the family... More

Description
The Start Bay Inn is a family run unspoilt pub right next to the beach which specialises in seafood. It has been run by the Stubbs family since 1977.We serve fish and chips to die for with a portion size to suit any appetite. We also serve an extensive choice of locally caught seafood which is displayed on our specials board. The scallops are hand picked from the Start Bay sea bed by Paul Stubbs the previous Landlord and dressed by either Clair, or Gail his daughters or Stu who are partners in the business. All the crab is dropped off live in the back yard where we dress it. We serve non fish choices with local steaks and burgers being favourites. Vegetarian options are also available.A children's menu is available and if you don't want your little ones having chips again then salad or jacket potato is offered as an alternative. Our sweets cabinet is always well stocked and local ice cream available year round. The bar has a good selection of real ales and local cider and a reasonably priced wine list.Seating is either in the bar where in the winter we have an open fire, the children's room or outside on the patio on the sea front. We pride ourselves on reasonably priced generous portions with good service by happy staff. We are not a restaurant or a gastro pub. We are an honest pub serving good food at reasonable prices which is why we are busy.
