we had read the reviews on trip advisor and tried out the place. we ordered for two specials of the day and were handed out a cold plate of mash and two small pieces of herring which was fried atleast four hours earlier that day for 60 SEK each. For 10 or 20 SEK more there are many, many far... More

This food stall outside slussen metro station serves herring - either fried or pickled. Comes with a huge serving of mashed potatoes and coleslaw. It was tasty and I guess is an authentic Swedish experience, judging by the number of locals who visited the stall. Food is reasonably priced - 75SEK per plate, which is cheap by Stockholm standards.

Oh my god. Still dreaming about the potatoes. This is essentially a food truck that sells fried herring with your choice of a few sides. The herring filets are lightly breaded before being fried on a flat-top. Not completely deboned but chewed through the tiny bones and didn't get them stuck in my throat because I'm not five years old.... More

I do love haring... Given Scandinavia is known for haring, I was really looking forward to this place. There's a reason why it's been open for over 20 years. And wow, it didn't disappoint. In the middle of January, there certainly wasn't as many people. Granted, besides the weather, haring season actually starts in April... Nevertheless, I ordered a big... More

Located outside Slussen metro stop, Nystekt Stromming is a food van that has supposedly been there for decades! Serving fried white fish in many different formats at very cheap prices, their white-fish Herring burger was one of the cheapest (55sek or $9 aud) and fastest foods I had on my Swedish trip. Simply delicious!

I've come here with old and new friends alike. It's been a hit for all of us. Just make sure you don't go there before a date or before an event where people may smell your potentially bad breath from the onion and fish. Nonetheless, I love this place and can't wait to go back!

Let's get one thing straight: this is a glorified street cart with prices and quality of a street food. Delicious tender and fresh fried fish served with a variety of garnishes. Enjoy!

For kr75, I got the fried herring plate wth mashed potato, slaw, pickled cucumber and red onion. It made a wonderful and inexpensive dinner. The Slussen area is a big mess right now with all the construction going on (and will be for a very long time -they found artifacts while digging) but the Strommingsvagnen is still where Google Map... I tried the fish with mashed potates, cucumber and onions. It was really tasty and the food was so fresh. The prices are really affordable compared to Stockholm's food prices. Go grab a bite there. You won't regret it!

Staying in Slussen

Neighbourhood Profile
A unique mix of grotesque 1960s concrete urban vision and cosy historical Swedish brick houses, Slussen has become one of Stockholm’s most architecturally edgy and controversial neighborhoods. Plans to rebuild the area have been on the agenda for decades, however, so far no agreement could be reached, which is the reason for the continuing decay of its brutalist substance. Nevertheless, the museums and the main shopping street, Götgatan, attract both locals and tourists with Sweden’s most fashion-forward clothing retailers, hipster coffee shops and restaurants. Once the lights are out, the area turns into a bustling nightlife haven, catering to all preferences, from posh hotel bars to sweaty underground nightclubs. There is no better place to experience the clash between old and new Sweden.
