I don't think cheap eats really exist in Reykjavik, for comparison think Manhattan++ in terms of prices, BLT sandwiches for $28 US, $22 cocktails - we don't normally cook food ourselves on vacation, but we did in Reykjavik. If so look for a Bonus store, prices in convenience stores are still outrageous.
If you want to drink, happy hour is really the only time prices are reasonable, usually they start around 4pm and go until 8pm, depending on the bar. Otherwise grab a bottle of alcohol at the duty free on the way in and mix your own, alcohol is CRAZY expensive here.
you can always grab their hotdogs for $5/6 and if you like lamb they are quite good.
