We wandered in and this restaurant exceeded expectations! It was cozy, the fish was incredible, and we loved the Viking beer. Highly recommend!!

This gem is a restaurant is highly rated on Lonely Planet, and for all the best reasons! I was on vacation with three of my friends, and we were seated promptly and the service was spectacular! Started off with the selection of Icelandic cheeses and some minke whale. Entrees were fabulous as well, we each had a different item and... More

Conveniently located in the city center heading towards the Cathedral...the restaurant was quaint, friendly service, and the food was good. Nothing really to WOW about, but I didn't find much of the food in Iceland very high up on the tasty chart. When in Iceland, we did try the whale. It was very similar to a nice piece of pan... More

The whale was good to try, very good with consistency of seared tuna. Everything else wasn't bad, just wasn't WOW. The lamb caught the attention to 3 out of our 4 party members. We had better lamb later in the trip.

Went for lunch on recommendation from the hotel clerk. Was not disappointed. I am not a fish lover but the lunch special ( 2 for one, 2 different pieces of fish (catfish and some pink fish) for one price) was very good. The fresh bread was very good.

My first, and one of the best, meals inn Iceland. Had a lovely lunch of impeccably fresh pacific catfish (fish of the day) on a bed of barley cooked in a "risotto" style. Simple, done perfectly and delicious. Was by myself, so can't comment on any other dishes, but what I had was delicious and enjoyed the casual surroundings. Food... More

We dropped by this place in a coincidence. It looked small and cozy and had an available table for us despite the rain and wind outside, so what a surprise that this place was so great and highly ranked on TA. Had the fish of the day, and it tasted excellent. The lady in charge also brought us some delicious... More

This was our second night in Reykjavik. The first night we'd had a microwaveable meal as we got to our apartment late but we thought we'd treat ourselves tonight so good old TA 'near me now' was used and we chose this restaurant. I'm not a mean or tight person but I don't like throwing money away so I struggled... More

Excellent! Perfect setting, excellent menu (although not for the fainthearted!) at a not too extortionate price. Was a really nice treat for a special occasion. It was though so good, and the menu so enticing, that we ate here a second time on our trip. Service was faultless, and we really enjoyed it. I couldn't recommend this place enough!

My partner and I went in for a light dinner and shared the Plaike. Cooked to perfection, we were quite satiated with the large portion. The menu had many good selections.

Description
Food connoisseurs and other gastronomes have ever since the year 2000 slipped into our basement during lunch hour to feast on various delicacies. But of course everyone knows that because ever since the restaurant opened for business it has been the least kept secret in the area.

Ostabuðin has truly been an oasis on Skolavorðustigur because we have tried our best to offer a wide varaity of fresh and curious products which have tickled our patrons taste buds and in turn trickled salivating reflexes in the city center.

Even though we have taken some pride in the queue that has formed outside our entrance every single day during lunch break for the past 15 years we have finally expanded our premises. Thus we can now welcome our patrons from dawn til dusk and offer them a variety of fish and meat dishes which we have refined with passion. Of course there is also a lot of cheese on the menu and now we can also serve wine with our fare.

Our daily specials always include both a fish dish and a soup during lunch hour on weekdays. Do not hesitate to ask what is on offer today. Also, our seafood soup never disappoints.

Our guests might have to share tables during the lunch hour rush but who knows – maybe you will make new friends.

Bon appetit, Joi.
