About
Narfeyrarstofa restaurant and café is the oldest operating restaurant in Stykkishólmur. It’s a family business and is open all year round. Narfeyrarstofa’s menu features inventive dishes served artfully in the beautiful surroundings of the restaurant, where utterly charming views from the premises bring life to the atmosphere. There is a strong emphasis on creativity in the kitchen, and it is safe to say that craftsmanship is held in high regard, as the ingredients are of the finest quality and sourced locally wherever possible. Narfeyrarstofa’s chefs prepare all ingredients from scratch, and the kitchen makes use of a powerful meat processor as local meat is prepared in different ways for the various dishes on the menu. From the restaurant there are views over Breiðafjörður bay’s “natural pantry”. Ingredients from there are on the table every day, exceptionally fresh. Blue mussels from Breiðafjörður are always on offer when in season. The menu also has a selection of hamburgers, proclaimed to be “the real deal”, “juicy” and “even better than búllaburgers” by our guests, who come back for them again and again! Our wine menu is unusually diverse and features specially selected wines of various types. The restaurant is in a two-storey house built in 1906 in the heart of Stykkishólmur, by the old church that towers over Aðalgata. There is room for 70 people indoors, and it’s also possible to sit outside when the weather’s nice. The atmosphere at Narfeyrarstofa is warm and welcoming, and the staff and the owners do everything they can to provide outstanding service to their guests.

We didn't expect to find many good places to eat out in Stykkisholmur and were prepared to cook in our Air BnB apartment for the two nights we stayed while exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. But having read about this restaurant in the Lonely Planet guide, we thought we should give it a go – and it was very much worth it. We were served complementary fresh bread with butter and smoked salt, which delicious. The Arctic charr with Icelandic barley and smoked tomatoes for main course was exceptional – beautifully cooked and full of flavour. For two people, we spent less than £60 in total (including beer and wine) which is pretty reasonable for Icelandic standards. A really memorable meal and would definitely recommend.

We were admittedly just happy to have an option for dining in during the off-season in western Iceland’s most traveled peninsula. This small but very robust restaurant could only seat with reservations, and the one server/bartender/hostess was exemplary in her calm, efficient and friendly service. Our food absolutely exceeded expectations, and was some of the best food we e had in Iceland. Ingredients were fresh, tasty and our dishes were prepared beautifully. We were in awe of what we had stumbled into, and would recommend this restaurant highly, but make a reservation! Their limited capacity and high regard will make “walking in” a disappointment. Enjoy!!

The meal was excellent. It arrive within 5 minutes of ordering, so there was little time for my partner to finish his beer before tackling his spaghetti with mussels. I had the soup, which was fantastic, and we both shared some lovely chablis from Simona Fevre (2017). Delicious!

Cosy house, original presentation. Found green mould on grated parmesan cheese, but got no excuses or compensation. The waitress said it "might be another cheese" but the cook confirmed it was parmesan. They did not see the problem with the mould...

We had booked for dinner on a monday night 4th of July a week before and on advice from friends booked a table upstairs which was accepted. When we arrived at the correct time we were told by the teenaged girls in reveption sorry upstairs is fully booked for a group. No matter what we were not welcome there. On the ground floor our option was to sit by the bar! We complained but to no avail, the ternage girls didn't give a hoot and didn't even say sorry! We of course left and had a lovely dinner at the Fosshotel Stykkishólmur.

We had been there before, about 10 years ago and liked it then. Now it started well, wonderful staff, but we had a lamb, and there were 4 "bites" of lamb on the dish, few burned potatoes and a litle bit of vegetables. We hardly got the taste of the lamb from these few bites but I think it was okay. We were still hungry and decited to try the homemade icecream, that was a larger portion, but it tasted like frozen butter/cream. I really hope they just had a replacement cook that day.

Nice main courses (scallops and the slow cooked cod particularly good). Waitresses were nice. The starter crab was definitely reheated (so lacked freshness) as the speed with which the food arrived after ordering was supersonic. I literally couldnt believe how fast the starters came to the table. And sure enough the main courses arrived instantly we finished our starters. Some people might like this but it’s not for me. You spend £100 on a meal that’s over in 45mins. And the wine list starts with Jacobs Creek…

We enjoyed some delicious meals during of 12 days in Iceland but this is probably our most memorable meal. My husband cannot quit telling everyone at home about the best salmon he has ever had, and the smoked tomatoes that accompanied it that made every bite melt in his mouth. My perfectly prepared scallops were a generous portion served on top of delicious sweet potato puree on a very long wooden plank. I did not care for the fish eggs served on the dried fish skin but I am sure others might. The flavors and presentation of the whole meal were simply extraordinary- I wished we could have stayed longer in the area just to be able to return again and sample more creations from this gifted chef. The young lady serving us said your brother was the chef and that he had learned to cook from her mother- simply amazing what comes out of the kitchen of this small restaurant. Like all fine dining in Iceland, do call ahead and be prepared for a most memorable meal!

We enjoyed a lovely meal at Narfeyrarstofa on a cold & wet summer's evening. The cosy setting was very welcome on such a night. Scallops are a must have when dining here - the portion is incredibly generous, tasty and so elegantly presented. The soft shell crab starter however, had a lot of promise but didn't quite deliver for me. Service is friendly. A very enjoyable experience overall.

We were looking forward to this eating experience as we had heard good things about this restaurant. The ambiance was good as was the service. The food on the other hand could have been better in our opinion. I had the fish and chips and my wife the scallops. The cod pieces were thin and overcooked in a strange batter that included doritos chips that were way to dominating. The fries and chili mayo were good but overall the dish was a disappointment. The scallops were excellent, marinated in garlic and lightly fried. The barley was good as a condiment but the sweet potato did not fit this dish in our opinion. The desert was tiramisu and was excellent. I recommend this place but not the fish and chips unless they change the batter and have better pieces of fish.

This was just about perfect. We stopped here for lunch with a small tour. The place is cozy and clean and has a very kind front of house. The food was extraordinary — the cod dish was the best we had in two weeks of Icelandic travel, and their take on fish and chips was really innovative and delicious. The tour had to move on, but this is a place that makes you want to linger. One piece of advice — it seems worth reserving in advance, even for lunch, as they were stacked up at the front door when we left. It was an unforgettable place, and when we’re back in Iceland we will return here.

If you add an off-menu dish, make sure you know how to cook it. Preparing the mussels is all in all easy: just clean them and cook them until they open. Serving a plate of dirty shellfish that is almost completely closed for a quarter - therefore inedible, because potentially contaminated - is really too much, especially considering the prices. And if you notice that customers have left a good part of the dish you should ask them what went wrong. Having said this, the atmosphere of the place is fascinating and the location is good. But it's not enough to make up for the huge flaw in the dish I was served. In closing, I add a detail which in my opinion is not insignificant (which however did not affect the already terrible rating): the restaurant serves one based on fin whale among the appetizers, and although Iceland continues to fish it, this mammal is considered at risk of extinction . In almost all of the country, as a result, fin whale is no longer served in restaurants. Continuing to do so is a sign of lack of respect for the environment.

Surprisingly great dinner in such a small Town. Husband got Icelandic beer and I had French wine. Hubs ordered fish and chips with fish crusted in Doritos and it was delicious. I had pan fried cod that was also very good. Bureaus salad was good as well. Would recommend.

We had the lamb and mussels as our main courses and they were prepared perfectly. This restaurant uses very fresh ingredients which is what attracted us to it.. Fresh bread with butter and Icelandic salt was served, which was also delicious. Finally, try their tiramisu for dessert...absolutely splendid!

Me and my husband had a wonderful food experience at Narfeyrarstofa. We both had the lamb sirloin and a caramel pie with a little candle on, because it was my husbands birthday 🙂 The service was sweet an polite and the atmosphere in this lovely old house was so warm and cosy. A big thanks from both of us!
