Enjoyed a local meal. Ate in their basement dining room as the main floor was full. Very good service and experience.

A corner place, very popular. You have to reserve at least for Saturday evenings. Austrian classic food, informal. Mix of locals and foreigners younger people. Hard to know how they found it.

You know as soon as you walk in that this place is the real deal. Locals abound, and a glance around at what people are eating makes you want to try it all. Impeccable schnitzel. Very good beer and wine. In my party, pretty much everyone enjoyed everything. Also, it just feels comfy. Great, traditional decor, wood panelling, warm lighting.... More

A friend and I ended up at Fromme Helene at the recommendation of a local gentleman. We arrived without reservations well before the dinner hour and were given a table with the caveat that we must be done eating in two hours so as to free our table up for someone who had reservations. Agreed! I had a wonderful bowl... More

A great place for trying out Austrian food. A hidden gem, not very touristic, they offer great variety of Austrian dishes. I highly recommend the schnitzel marinated in horseradish and mustard. Nice wine selection and friendly staff!

This is a cozy neighborhood place that was very busy the night we were there. The service was fine but the food was marginal. I had boiled beef and that should have been the first clue. The red cabbage and potatoes were fine but the beef was tough. My husband had wiener snitzel which was not as good as we... More

Went there for lunch on a weekday with a business group. The place was packed, mostly by older locals. It serves mostly traditional Austrian/Viennese food, and are obviously very good at that. Had the Wiener Schnitzel, the real one with calf meat. A really large portion was delivered to me with a side of some potatoes and salad. The schnitzel... More

Staying in Josefstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.
