We had a good meal and the dessert (ginger and chocolate cake with marmalade semi-freddo) was really really good! Unfortunately, we booked at rather short notice for a busy night and our table was a little too near the bar for our liking. It was also a Friday night - and we were unaware that Friday is jazz night and... More

Had a wonderful experience at The Old Black Lion. Celebrating with family we had a lovely evening - the Sparkling Wine was on ice and the food was amazing. One of our party had Beef Stew which was rich and tender. I had a steak which as requested was rare and perfect. Another of our party had the Bream which... More

Passing through Hay on Wye on a cool 1st of March, we popped in for a drink. It was very quiet, so we had our pick of the tables. The log burner was lit so we sat very comfortably near to a welcome source of heat. Having seen the lunch menu we decided to stop for lunch. Two courses for... More

Went for Valentines dinner in this traditional and friendly pub/restaurant. Food was great value and we liked the fact that the glasses of wine were not overpriced compared to a bottle. Will definitely go again

Hay on Wye is a delightful border town full of character with shops to match.A stones throw from the centre is the wonderful Old Black Lion. What a fantastic place. Its old world charm wouldn't go amiss in a Harry Potter film.Rickety stairs, open fires ,antique furniture sheer bliss. We loved it.The welcome and friendliness of staff bowled us over. The evening meal was good... Fantastic menu, ate there both nights of our two night stay because the food was so good on the first night.. As a vegetarian I often find menus are quite boring for us veggies, not so at the Old Black Lion.. Well done to the Chef... Try the triple cooked chips!!!!

Stayed at the hotel overnight so decided to have an evening meal here. Greeted with a friendly reception, and sat in a lovely part of the hotel with lots of character. A nice, small selection on the menu with something to cater for the majority. The food was fabulous (local steak and triple cooked chips) and a generous portion, especially... More

First visit to The Old Black Lion and we had the last table as it was very busy. The food was lovely and the staff were friendly and efficient. There was a Jazz band on which was a lovely surprise. A very good night.

We met up with my brother as one of our annual get togethers. The building itself is old and full of character. The greeting on arrival was very warm and we definitely got the feeling we genuinely welcome. The rest of our short stay was at the same level, nothing appeared to be too much trouble. As to food what... More

After reading the reviews on here, we booked this restaurant for a Friday night before we left home. This is not a normal pub and it does not serve typical pub grub. The food was well cooked and reasonably priced. As we'd booked a Friday night there was a jazz band playing which added a nice ambience to the atmosphere.... More
