A night out organised with friends who had come down to Norfolk for a long weekend. You know you’ve made a good choice when you ask friends for recommendations and they all come up with the same restaurant. The dreaded Covid word has to be mentioned and the restaurant didn’t disappoint. Plenty of space between the tables and clear signs giving guidance on where to go to enter the restaurant. We didn’t go on one of the Gov discounted meal days and found the staff very attentive and happy to wait to take our order until we were ready. The food like the service was excellent and would have no hesitation in returning for another visit.

I was a little anxious about going out to eat (due to COVID 19) but my husband persuaded us to go out for a family meal at Rani's. The food and service were exceptional (as always) and the restaurant felt safe and spacious. We went on Monday evening and so took advantage of the 'Eat out to help out' scheme - which made it great value too!

While visiting Norfolk some friends of ours stayed at Yaxham Mill and invited us for dinner. With Ranis being on the doorstep, it was the natural choice. Being from Leicester and being Indian I know to expect an Indian restaurant focused on the English pallet. As I would say it’s an Indian not for Indians. First impressions when entering the venue are really good. Nice decor, well stocked bar with Cobra and Kingfisher beers to hand. We were seated quickly and given enough time to review the menus. I chose the Lamb Balti. Service the staff was excellent making you feel very welcome. The food as well presented and tasty but not overwhelming with spice like you would get in an Indian restaurant for Indian people. But then I expected that. This is a lovely place to eat and balanced just right for the local pallet. I’ve given four rating for the venue, staff and service.

Neighbours recommended so we ordered takeaway in some anticipation of a good curry. But that is not what we got unfortunately. Three of us ordered three different curries (one very hot, one medium heat, one mild) but it was clear when it all arrived that two of three ‘sauces’ had split, and there was no distinction in taste between all three. Very little chicken in any of them but lots of huge slices of greasy onions and peppers. Pilau rice bland and totally lacking in flavour. Huge disappointment and we will not be using again. This is sloppy, lazy, budget takeout which patronises customers at high-end costs. If you are going to charge £10 per curry then the portion should not be split, small and only vaguely recognisable as ‘curry’. YUK - was the resounding result from three people who love a good curry - this was anything but.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views, and we are sorry that you felt this way. Could I ask that you contact us directly so we can identify which dishes you have had an issue with, then we can work as a team to identify what went wrong to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. It is unusual for any of our customers to be not be happy with our food, which is why it is a priority that if something has gone wrong and someone highlights a specific case then we will act accordingly. Thanks Team Rani’s

As a regular user of this establishment I have never been disappointed , however i otrdered a takeaway for delivery on 20/11/20 and as usual arrived bang on time. Unfortunately one of the meals , the tandorri king prawns was well below standard for the price charged at £12.95 I would have expected more than 6 prawns. Not good value for money in my opinion , all the other dishes were good but have had much better from them in the past. Don't know what happened , perhaps getting a bit complacent. Will give it another go and see what happens. Would be a shame if they let standards slip as it's such a nice place with nice people.

Went for dinner with my wife and we were seated a a back dining room. The phrase out of site out of mind is apt. We waited an age for food, we has papadoms and had to ask for plates we waited an age for main courses which were not hot. We couldn’t start because we had no cutlery. The waitress spent all evening apologising. Possible took their eye off the ball due to the high volume of takeaways being served. We were a captive audience so we could wait. I know I have the option and in future will go elsewhere can’t keep wasting £60

I had high hopes for this restaurant but I was a little disappointed. Compared to other Indian takeaways this didnt meet my expectations. It was expensive considering the portions were small (I was still hungry afterwards), I had a chicken balti which was averagely spiced (personally I prefer my baltis to be hotter, this one was very mild), too many chunks of onion and pepper which a high quality curry shouldn't need, a lack of sauce, and no option of a large portion of rice so the regular wasnt enough for myself and my partner. The poppadoms were good, the chutneys were average and the naan breads were soft and doughy. The best thing about the whole meal was the chicken which was divine, probably the best chicken I've tasted in a curry. I recently ate at one of the best indians in the country so I guess it depends on what you're comparing it to but I still expected better.

Heard great things about this take away so thought we'd try it instead of our usual one. Never again. One on the worst Indian meals iv had. Popadoms were undercooked , mango chutney didn't look or taste like mango, neither did the mint yogurt live up to its name! Korma was watery and chips were soggy and tasteless. The king prawn butterfly was not nearly worth £6! Prawn cocktail was a joke. Chicken Tikka masala was ok but a bit on dull side. Best things were the garlic naan and egg rice. Very over priced for the quality of food and that's with the 20% discount.

Saw reviews, were staying locally so thought we'd give it a go. Oh my days. In 1 hr & 20 minutes we received our starter. We usually have either poppadums or a starter & there is obviously an expectation for customers to have them as this "buys time". I said to my husband once the wine is finished I'm off. As well as tables for 2, 4 & 6 there was a table of 12 & one of 16 plus a chap constantly answering the 'phone with takeaway orders. Obviously service suffered significantly due to overbooking/too few staff. Our meals were acceptable though tepid not hot and veg side dishes underseasoned with no S & P provided on table. We had ordered filled naans but they were paper thin. We ate what we were presented with as were hungry & tired after a full day walking on the coast. We asked to pay & waiter apologised for any rush or delay with service alas too little too late to warrant a tip.

4 pitiful mouthfuls of fish for £10.95. You should be ashamed. Ordered monk fish I was advised they only had salmon or talipa. Both cheaper fish than monk fish aggressive but not expect such a pitiful serving. Will not be returning or recommending.

Have been to Rani’s quite a few times, the food here is terrific. The staff are lovely, polite, kind and caring. They provide a top service and believe in looking after their customers be it eating in or take away. You will be hard pressed to find somewhere better than Rani’s xxx

Visited this restaurant following a glowing review from friends. We called to book and was told they were busy but we could have a table but needed to give up the table by 8pm, we arrived early 615pm was given our table straight away and ordered poppadoms & pickles and drinks, which turned up promptly, things went down hill from there. The waiter finally took our order at 715pm after asking several times if we could order? During the wait we noted the constant stream of takeaways being collected and at one point there were 7 people waiting with several staff dealing with these people? Staters arrived at 735pm prawn puree , mixed starter. These looked nice but was warm bordering on cold ? As the time approached 8pm our plates were cleared and mains delivered chicken Jalfreji & lamb chops. These were served on sizzlers didn't look particular appetising, my wife tried to eat the chops which were over cooked and rock hard and the sauce had burnt taste due to being served on a sizzler? As for my Jalfreji it had 5 very small pieces of chicken and overloaded with onions & peppers to bulk the meal out , and the sauce being described as thick i could have used it to build a wall . We were asked if our meal was OK when my wife stated she wasn't happy the waiter didn't know what to say and walked off? After leaving 90% of the meal we waited & waited ( while the staff delt with the takeaway demand) in the end i went to counter and paid the bill , again asked if we enjoyed the meal we replied no again they didn't know what to say , we said we wouldn't be returning paid the bill and left. Whilst its lovely to see local businesses busy following lockdown, if they concentrated on serving restaurant customers rather than takeaway collection our meal may have been better and service more timely, we felt that because they are very busy they don't really care about customers

Family celebration with elderly guest in wheelchair for first experience in Indian cuisine - booked for an early meal & made them aware of wheelchair user. Drinks & poppadoms arrived promptly & told to make them aware when ready to order - we told them 3 times before someone actually took our order some 50 mins after our arrival. Over an hour later our food finally arrived after we had asked them twice to check on our order. Food mediocre & service extremely poor! A trip to the toilets revealed that their disabled toilet was being used as a store room with no access for anyone with any type of disability & no alternative facilities available! Shocking! Won’t be visiting again & certainly won’t recommend it.

Fantastic food and warm welcoming staff, Ranis has a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a family dinner or special occasion. Staff were very polite and attentive. We had a very pleasant evening and would recommend Ranis Indian restaurant. Ranis also deserves a special mention as they provided free meals during the pandemic to ‘Thank the NHS staff for their hard work’, it was a lovely gesture and very much appreciated after a long shift. Thank you.

Quiet this evening, probably not a surprise for a Monday evening. We have eaten in and had takeaway many times from Rani's and they've never let their quality slip. Foot always tastes great, portions are well sized, and the staff are friendly and attentive, music isn't too loud. Not the cheapest around Dereham, but definitely worth the money!
