About

Tabnabs is a cafe/licensed restaurant in the village of Mattishall. Popular with cyclists and walkers, we provide delicious home made food cooked to order. We always a selection of fresh cakes baked by the team, and even have gluten free and vegan options. Breakfast, lunches and afternoon teas, are served in a friendly, efficient and relaxed atmosphere. The upstairs area ‘The Crows Nest’ can be hired for private events and outside events can be catered for. In the summer months we have several tables outside so we can welcome our furry friends, and we open for occasional evenings too.

Great start to the week!!

Breakfast at Tabnabs is a fntastic start to the week. We are regulars for takeaway (I think we have probably eaten our weight in cake and scones since March) with occasional visits to eat in. We always feel very safe here, we have observed staff thoroughly cleaning tables and chairs between guests, tables are well spaced out and numbers restricted, and the cafe is well ventilated. So last week I kept dreaming of eggy toast and finally persuaded my husband to venture out. He had a full breakfast, I changed my mind and had Eggs Royale which is poached eggs with smoked salmon, which was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. As a regular, I know to order a double shot in my coffee - but I have friends who prefer their coffee less strong. As always, service was excellent, all the staff here are friendly. and make you feel welcome. The scones for the day had just come out of the oven, so we have 2 Christmas pudding scones for later. So thank you Tabnabs and see you soon.

Afternoon Tea Delivered

I ordered Afternoon Tea to be delivered to a friend. The feedback was amazing! My friend reported that the delivery (non contact) was very friendly. They both said the food was amazing - especially the sausage rolls!! It was well presented and extremely well received. I currently order weekly and find all of the products extremely tasty and would recommend anyone to try the food if you've not already!

We are enjoying being able to share some happiness in the community, during the 'lockdown' and look forward to being able to welcome customers back into Tabnabs, when it is safe to do so. Birthday breakfast

Booked an outside table for 6 [plus the dogs]. All made welcome. [ dogs got biscuits] All had cooked breakfasts, all plates cleared. Eggs Florentine were divine and cooked to perfection. Good choice of drinks. Staff are friendly and helpful. Great start for my daughters birthday

Slow service but decent food

I visited here for the first time with a couple of family members for Sunday brunch. Location is lovely nestled in a small village within a courtyard. There are tables inside and outside so depending on the weather you could choose to sit outdoors. We decided to go inside as it was quite windy when we visited and went upstairs to the crows nest. As the crows nest is set in what would’ve been the eaves of the building there is no real view out the windows which is a shame. However tables are well spaced and distancing maintained as well as hand sanitiser on arrival and details of customers being taken. The menu is not extensive however it has got some really good choices on there. My companions ordered a cooked breakfast and I chose the eggs Florentine. Despite staff being reasonably attentive to start with our food took an exceptionally long time to arrive and didn’t actually get to our table until an hour after our reservation time. When delivered the member of staff was extremely stressed and told us she had to go and cook lunch before racing off downstairs. To be brutally honest I don’t eat out to take on board other people stresses and we could’ve done without that. Our food was decent and cooked as requested but I have to it was not special. Would I return? Probably not as there are better places nearby however if you’re in the area it’s worth a try.

Expensive , watery coffee

At £2.75 for a small cup of cappuccino this cafe is considerably more expensive than most in this area. Not only that but what I was presented with was weak and watery, even instant would have been better. There are many local cafes selling really tasty coffee for less than £2, in fact in Diss one can buy a superb cappucino for just £1.40!! Very poor value indeed.

We pride ourselves on delicious coffee, prepared by the team with great care, and we always use good quality locally sourced and roasted coffee beans. Disgusting customer service

We booked a table for 6 for breakfast at 10.30am on Father's Day ,well in advance. No problem it seemed. We arrived and were told to go to our table upstairs. On my way up I was accosted by a staff member asking, had we booked. I explained yes and we had been told to go upstairs. The table we were given was a sofa coffee table for 5 . With 6 adults for breakfast, expecting to order a full English, how could we be expected to eat huddled over a coffee table that we could not fit around . Had we gone for coffee and cake it would of been OK but it was Father's Day and 10.30 in the morning and we had all arranged to meet for breakfast. When one of our party went to ask if there was anywhere else suitable , she was told 'no we are busy it is Father's Day ' and the member of staff simply walked off not waiting for a response. Yes we know it was Father's Day that's why we booked !! We left at that point only to see a table for 6 with 4 people on. Furthermore when we rang up to complain we were told they were ' too busy to deal with it'. The point is we had booked for 6 for breakfast not just turnied up on the off chance. To not have time for customers is downright rude,however busy you are. We received a far more professional service at Wetherspoins where we went instead.

We were very sorry to hear that you felt unable to enjoy your Father's Day breakfast on the coffee tables at Tabnabs, and are disappointed that you felt that the staff were rude to you. Unfortunately, as you had not specified a preference for seating when you made your online booking, (just two days before) our online reservation system allocated you to a table that was free. As we were fully booked that day, none of the staff would have been able to offer you another alternatives, other than a table outside? From discussion with the staff later that day, it appeared you declined the offer of an outside table, when this was offered. At Tabnabs we have customers of all shapes and sizes and some of them do choose to sit at the coffee tables, even for breakfast! We have also had groups of up to 6 people sitting at those particular tables too, although admittedly it can be a bit of a squeeze. Many of our regular customers will specify an area or even a table if they wish to make a online booking such as 'downstairs only' or perhaps 'round table no 17'. This can be done in the'notes' section. This gives our team a chance to ensure customers with any specific wishes can be seated appropriately eg 'wheelchair user' would be seated in our downstairs area. Our booking system is an improvement to the old ways, but it does not come without its challenges. We would also like to apologize that we were unable to respond to you telephone call during the Fathers' Day lunchtime. It was indeed a very busy time for everyone. We understood from the staff member involved that you were offered a call back from the manager later that day, but you said you would prefer to write a bad review instead. It is a shame that you didn't give us the chance to apologize for getting things wrong, as we would have liked to have been able to offer some attempt at a resolution. We hope that you will give Tabnabs another try in the future. Hopefully, we will get things right for you.

We thought we would get cake.....

....and then we saw the menu and was spoilt for choice. I have a very moist gluten free apple and almond cake, hubbie went for a delicious coffee and walnut cake. We stopped for a coffee and fruit tea. The tea was real loose fruit not in a bag and served in a pot. It smelled Amazing, tasted even better. We hadn't intended on stopping only get a take away, but they offered to get a table and chairs out for us to enjoy the rest of the sunshine.

Thanks so much for your glowing review. It is lovely to enjoy any sunshine on the courtyard, even in October! We do also strive to have a large selection of our homemade cakes, and try to be inclusive and cater for all dietary requirements. We would hate for anyone to have to miss out. Our teas are also very popular. We stock over 40 varieties of loose leaf teas. We hope to see you again soon.

Great food

This welcoming Cafe/restaurant is situated near the church in the village of Mattishall some 5 miles from Dereham. This was my first visit and both my wife and I were impressed with the range of food available on the menus. We opted for a sandwich the perceived lighter lunch option !! The sandwich was packed with filling and served with either chips or crisps and was accompanied by a salad with a tasty dressing and a mouth watering slice of watermelon. one of my grandchildren had the special Rump steak meal how on earth did he get through it all !!! His dad had the home made burger and was beaten! This has to be the best eatery in the area including Dereham sensibly priced huge portions and a delightful outside area to eat under great modern parasols. We will return and have no hesitation in recommending Tabnabs to friends and family

We recently stayed close by and visited on a Sunday Morning for Breakfast six adults and three dogs and I have to say its hands down one of the nicest breakfast I have ever had, one of the party has a few dietary requirements and the staff could not have been better with accommodating him. If you had 6 star it would defiantly be ticked. If you are in or around the area its worth a visit you won’t be disappointed.

What an excellent gem!

What an excellent find, the smell coming up the drive was enough to make me feel hungry alone. The service was excellent, very helpful and polite, the chef was excellent and the food was both well presented and extremely tasty. Portion sizes were generous too. Overall a lovely little place for brunch and outstanding value for money, thank you. Ps why the full English my wife had looked amazing, I would recommend the eggs Benedict, very tasty!

Good place for all meals.

We live in Mattishall and often use the eatery. Over a number of visits, we have eaten all types of meals, at different times of the year and day, In summary, all food and drink is good quality and well presented. The staff are very good and helpful.

Top cappuccino

I am seriously very fussy about my cappuccino, it has to be dry ie all froth not just a milky coffee with a bit of scum on top, so I rarely order it when out. So I am happy to say that Amber has joined the ranks of my tried and trusted cappuccino makers - one of only five people in the UK who I know can produce the real deal!! So between cappuccino and cake (with ice cream!) do I also have room for food? Yes of course - Selo makes the best poached eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast, and plenty of choice for lunch. All home made to order with friendly and efficient service. PS hoping we will have Christmas scones again this year!

Lovely location and very clean. I love a small coffee shop and Tabnabs doesn’t disappoint. Service was really good as the staff were attentive without being fussy. The coffee was pretty good and the accompanying cake was just right . I thought the price was reasonable and would certainly visit again.

Excellent food & the portion sizes are very generous . Sausages roll was amazing👌, sausage & onion baguette was also delicious. Both were beautifully presented. Cappuccino was the best ive tasted in norfolk. All the staff were friendly and informative even when extremely busy. Value for money, definitely.

A must visit eaterie

Visited Saturday lunchtime and sat upstairs. Very clean and bright although only roof lights so unable to see out. Service very good and food very tasty and fresh . Highly recommend bacon sausage and egg banquette
