This South African restaurant and coffee shop is based near the banks of the Sundays River, and just outside the Southern Gate of Addo Elephant National Park, in a small town called Colchester. We offer great food and excellent service while dishing up lots of local and lekker favourites seven days a week. “A Taste of Africa” is the brainchild of local entrepreneur, Karl Botha, who saw the need for authentic South African food to be served in Colchester. It opened in June 2015 and has been providing a venue for good friends and families to hang out and enjoy a slice of African cuisine ever since. The menu comprises of a range of delicious favourites, from several breakfast options, pizzas, burgers and pastas to steaks, kudu carpaccio and the well known South African braai meal. Famous for its delicious Mastertons coffees, “A Taste of Africa” also boasts a variety of ciders, wines, local beers and craft beers such as Car Park John. Good and big burgers

This restaurant was recommended to us at our accommodation. The location right next to a gas station was a bit off-putting, but the restaurant was very pleasant and authentically decorated. The burgers were also delicious and filling in terms of size. Nevertheless, we decided to have the cheesecake for dessert. This was more of a cream with a biscuit base, but still edible. In any case, the price-performance ratio was right, so all in all, 4 stars!

Little competition, but good

Because of the lack of competition in the area we feared a bit for the quality, but were pleasantly surprised. Given the name of the restaurant, we were also surprised to find “African” dishes such as pizza and hamburger on the menu. We had a nice dinner here, although the chocolate cake with dessert seemed baked a while ago. The service was friendly and efficient.

Venison steak not edible, braai plate was alright

The Braai plate was good but the venison steaks were a desaster: one was not edible because you just couldn‘t bite it. The second one was chewy. In addition to that the knives could not be used for cutting because they were blunt. The waiter said there are no better ones. Thats ridiculous…

A very good dinner

This restaurant does not pay a lot when you arrive in the parking lot but once inside, it is a very warm place all wooden. The cuisine is excellent: I had a grilled fish, sweet potato fries and chocolate mousse & Kahlua. Simple, efficient, Best Value Award, smiling service. I enjoyed it, I recommend.

A must to eat!

We are local regulars at this lovely restaurant. The setting including having their own stage where they have local as well as celebrities. Not just is breakfast good, but the Chicken salad and all of their pizzas and other variety food is scrumptious. Yes of course one will experience a bit of slow or maybe an order mistake, but show me one restaurant that does not make a mistake from time to time. However, they are always willing to immediately rectify and apologize and besides all of whatever may come up. There is no other place in this town or close by where the locals and hospitality establishments receive a big discount on your meal and drinks. Absolutely wonderful. They are always busy with some sort of marketing and specials and very interactive with their guests, which is fabulous! Thank you to the owner, Karl Botha and his management staff, mainly Marelize and Norman who makes sure the rest of management and their team keep their high standards. Well done!!!!!!!!!1

Coffee ok but slow service

We first used this restaurant in 2017 when it was small coffee shop, been in it and eaten several times over the years and it has been good. We went in on a quiet Sunday mid morning in Oct , about 8 /10 seated in the restaurant including us so not too busy. We only wanted coffee and a piece of cake. We waited about 20 mins for the coffee expecting the cake to arrive at the same time, after nearly finishing our coffee and chasing the cake it finally arrived about 10 mins later! Poor service really, and they didn’t seem bothered, though the coffee and cake were ok but expensive compared to everywhere else we had been whilst travelling in South Africa. The wifi is good so at least the time passes quickly whilst waiting. They have a bit of a captive market before people go into Addo elephant park.

In Sundays River, Colchester on a vacay for the night or weekend? Camping or staying at a B n' B? Get out of the "house" and try Taste of Africa. According to the out going manager, the restaurant was recently re-decorated. The new rustic theme complements the out door seating area and ambiance. Service was attentive and prompt. The menu was varied, lots of choices. Prices very reasonable. We were lucky, there was live music the night we stopped in - the musician was playing an all glass fretless guitar. One of a kind in the world. We enjoyed our evening immensely.

Shout out to Alric and Marilyn

We were staying at Addo Elephant Park and came here for a takeaway on 30-31 March. On Thursday we came for a takeaway in the evening. It was really busy so we had to wait a while, but we saw Marilyn who is also a guide at Addo. We’d seen her earlier on in the afternoon when she’d pointed out some sleeping lions in the Patk! We had a lovely conversation and we showed each other our photos from the Park. The 20-30 minute wait flew by and our food was still hot when we got back to camp. Importantly, it was delicious! The following morning we had brunch and were served by Alric. Not only was brunch yummy, but Alric was super helpful when I had a very important question- what was the name of the beautiful flower in the garden! I saw him taking photos of it and he later told me he did a Google search! He definitely went not only the extra mile, but 10 miles. Big shout out to the staff and the chef for the food! Make sure you go!

The food options are not appetising, they serve everyday meals you can prepare for yourself. The food is not worth the price you pay for. Though the setting is good for a drink, otherwise you are paying for food you could have prepared yourself. I change of menu would go a long way (a hearty stew with pap, chicken feet starter dish, creamy samp and stew - that's African)

Dinner was really great! The Garlic Butter Steak is highly recommended! Chips were crunchy and that chocolate Milkshake...pure magic. Andries is absolutely the friendliest and most skilful waiter you'll ever meet! We'll be back tomorrow!

Never Again - the Sequel

In March 2018 I reviewed this place and vowed never to visit it again. However having had a long day in Addo Elephant Park we decided to give it another try in the hope they had improved.Not o good idea.It took 35 minutes to get the Waiters attention. When the toasted sandwich eventually arrived it was appalling - cold, with large chunks of tinned ham ( even the Waiter apologised saying the Kitchen Staff had a slicing machine but rarely used it ). There will be no more sequels - this place is impossible!

We are always striving for service excellence , I am shocked at the fact , that you had to wait 30 min for service , this is not our standards & service we portray. I really want to investigate this incident (As we dont serve chunky canned ham) and have it sorted as to avoid any future problems like this .Please let me know on which day this happened & who served you ? Our host of the lodge recommended us to come here. Whilst being a bit anxious about a restaurant on the same premises as a petrol station / spar (supermarket), we were pleasantly surprised. Yes, no real authentic african food, but a bit more continental with an african twist such as game meat. But I was glad that I didn’t have to eat chicken legs or pap.
