We ate here three times during our stay at the hotel, it was so good. Each evening was an occasion during which the main chef and the pastry chef would dazzle with their approach to cooking with local, good quality ingredients. The wine list is extensive and broad-based. We chose bottles from the local areas and were not disappointed. The setting is magnificent and overlooks the lake and park. The resident "wildlife" includes a swan, ducks, moorhens and a heron. During the day we would watch the heron fish for its dinner, and he was good at it too. It's clear the chefs have a passion for what they do, and the front of house staff went above-and-beyond to make each occasion so memorable. If you are staying in the hotel, book early as the food is prepared and cooked for the reservations they have that evening, and you do not want to miss out on such a fine experience.

This is the second time we have dined at this lovely restaurant. The setting is tranquil and picturesque overlooking a lake. Service was excellent and the food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Will definitely return when next in Saintes.

We we're in Saintes today and when it got near to lunch time I looked up on here where was good to eat in the area. We weren't rely planning on a two hour plus lazy lunch enjoying the most incredible food and wine but after reading other reviews and discovering we were literally four minutes away we decided to go for it. We were seriously not disappointed! In fact I'd say we were all blown away by everything from the warm welcome, the super staff who were friendly, ever so helpful and knowledgeable to the very last morsel of delicious food. Will definitely be visiting again...

It certainly looks nice and has a pleasant garden. Unfortunately, every time we have been there (about 5 times, for Tesla charging), there was some reason for not being able to order food. A small packaged sandwich at the insane price of 9,90 was all they could provide. Pity, it could be a very nice stopover.

Since we had booked to stay at the hotel, and since the hotel appeared to be slightly isolated, it seemed sensible to book our evening meal here. The dining room was in a pleasant enough setting. The staff we found trying almost too hard for their demeanour to match the style of the resaurant, but they were attentive. We can remember the meal quite well because we were uncertain whether the Chef was trying to challenge us with unexpected food combinations, or experimenting with, "what if I mixed A with B" . With entree and main ordered, we had 3 amuses bouches only the last , pre-dessert, being what we might describe as good quality and very tasty. Portions, typical of this style of Michelin dining, were tiny. The guinea fowl was cooked well but the skin rather unpleasant.

We have eaten here before when staying at the hotel and the food is good. This time the restaurant was busy and the service was appalling. Despite having a reservation we waited 50 minutes for our order to be taken, reminding them twice and seeing people who came in after us being served. It was another 40 minutes before we had our first course. The next morning I asked to speak to the manager but he was at the market. I was promised that someone would get in touch with me but I heard nothing. Despite this being a nice hotel to stay on the way to the channel ports we will not be doing so again.

I wrote a review while waiting with dirty plates that I have since deleted because I think I’ve figured out the issue and I’m not entirely sure it’s a good thing. The problem is Michelin. We had an absolutely lovely meal here. I cannot fault any of the food. Or in fact the location - it’s beautiful and well worth a visit. The service was fantastic … until it wasn’t. And I can now pinpoint when that was. We started with two lovely vegetable forward dishes that just made us happy with how fresh and lovely they were. Paired with a nice wine and crusty bread they were great. Mains followed without lingering over dirty plates. Things wear looking good, we had a nice view of the ducks and the nice gardens. Happy. Then… the table next to us arrived. An older French gentleman who was well dressed with two ladies. Suddenly all the focus in the restaurant changed. And we were forgotten. Our plates from the mains sat on our table for 20 minutes. I went to the bathroom expecting maybe that might trigger something? Nope. Back to dirty plates. Finally plates taken away. Cheese board dropped on us with no explanation for what was what. Before even that the waitress looked at all the crumbs on the table - no tablecloths or placemats here by the way - and ignored them putting down the cutlery right on top. We sat for a further 20 minutes after finishing our desserts, still unclear on what cheese we had eaten. In France no respect for cheese? We finally gave up and went back to our room. The nice lady at the front desk chased up about 10 minutes later with the petit fours but by then it was too late. So back to the first paragraph of the review. The problem: Michelin. This place is so desperate for a star that it threw away a genuine guest experience for what I have to assume was an inspector. That’s shocking. And for no reason! They were doing so well. But unfortunately I cannot recommend this restaurant. And I hope the Michelin people read this because pandering is exactly what the concept of the guide is supposed to avoid.

Not quite right, I’m sure some will rave about a combination of foie gras with oyster but it didn’t suit my taste buds and where does a wine growing nation get their prices from, a very small glass of chinnon 9 euros for a very ordinary wine when the night before I had in a beautiful restaurant in Spain a big glass of smooth tasting Rioja for 2.50 euros, what is going on in your restaurant, you probably sells 1 tenth of the wine that the Spanish one does,it’s too expensive and bad value for money

We called in for a drink whilst our Tesla was charging. And also to see if we had perhaps made a mistake not staying here. We hadn’t! A somewhat patronising “what do you want” when we came into the bar - surely we weren’t looking so scruffy?! And a positive sneer and eye roll 🙄 when we mentioned we were staying at the other Logis hotel around the corner. Well, it is only 2 star and half the price........Anyway we had a drink and then asked to pay, and were referred to reception where we waited and waited. Eventually I went back to the bar and explained in my best French that there was no one at reception. The same bar lady then condescended to come and take the money herself, but not before taking a phone call first!! It’s a huge service mistake to be offhand with casual customers, for you never know who they are, how often they might visit in the future or whether they may never darken your door ever again. A smile and politeness is easy to do and free. We hope you appreciate this feedback.

Dear Madam, dear Sir, All feedback helps us to constantly improve the quality of our service and we are always open to suggestions to improve our day-to-day operations. We are a restaurant and a hotel, as you put it yourself, you were neither coming to eat or to stay, you were coming to check that you had not made a mistake by NOT staying at Le Relais. Rather a strange reason… Clients point out that each member of our staff is friendly, professional and that they go out of their way to ensure the best possible service for every customer. I am truly sorry this was not what you seem to have experienced but then many misunderstandings start with a bad translation, I can assure you that "what do you want" meant "how can I help you?". Yours sincerely, Charlotte Tarry, Manager

We came here to recharge our Tesla... the restaurant looks nice but that’s all. The lunch a courgette soup was served cold and in plastic, the salads we ordered were served as well in plastic... the cutlery was removed and we had to eat with a wooden spoon... very special

Dear Madame, dear Sir, Thankyou for your feedback, but when you came to charge your Tesla, you chose our pool menu, which is our snacking option. Our gourmet restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. To answer the demand of our regular Tesla customers we have put together a special "snack" option open all day long serving fresh salads, homemade sandwiches. We are sorry that this option was not what you were hoping for and we lookk forward to welcoming you in the near future. As you can read on the other comments our Chefs cuisine is highly recommended! Kind regards, Charlotte Tarry, Manager

I had had the most awful journey to get to the hotel, but the moment I saw the beautuful restaurant, I started to relax. I mentioned my awful journey to one of the staff, and I was looked after so nicely. The food was worthy of Michelin stars - beautifully presented, wonderfully tasty, and very inventive. I really want to go back again.

The more we go here the better it gets, the staff are so friendly and great service. We only had 2 courses but it was just outstanding. We had for amuse bouche cauliflower soup, poulet fermier them the millefeuille. If you come to Saintes you must go! I’ve seen other comments about how they arrived and couldn’t get a table if you arrive at any good restaurant and haven’t booked then you won’t get a table !
