Concierge at our hotel recommended this restaurant and we’re so glad he did.We visited for dinner and then for lunch the next day it was that good.Excellent menu and wine selection & impeccable service. We tried both meat & fish dishes both as good.Perfectly located in...the port.We will for sure return on our next Cassis stay.More
We sat outside, at one of the first tables next to the water. The ambience was superb. The view of town and the bay, paired with gorgeous weather, is tough to be beat. We had two servers (maybe a server and server assist?). One seemed...annoyed to be there and distracted, and I feel I should mention we didn’t ask for anything special. The server assist (?) was lovely. Although he only spoke French and is English, he was helpful and hard-working. We ordered the prix fixe menu: fish soup x2, beef, salmon, mango pavlova, and apple tart. The soup and beef were outstanding. The salmon and desserts were good, solid dishes, but not spectacular.More
We have wanted to try bouillabaisse for some time but have formerly been put off by either the price or of being sure that we are getting the real thing. Having discovered that this restaurant is a member of "la charte de la bouillabaisse Marseillaise,"...we decided to book a table. Although we have nothing to compare it with, we can't believe bouillabaisse can be much better than this. There is lot to get through so unless you have a very large appetite, we wouldn't recommend having a starter - we didn't and still left feeling very full. We'd also thoroughly recommend a bottle of the excellent local Cassis white wine to accompany it. Our only small criticism is that the tables in the area where we sat were rather close together. The price seems high, but if you consider the price of a three or four course meal, it's not as bad as it looks!More
We feel very fortunate we happened onto Chez Gilbert. The servers were friendly, helpful and attentive. We focused on seafood offerings and all of the food was fresh, perfectly prepared and presented, and tasted excellent. The wine recommendation was spot on. I have food allergies...and they made sure I was well cared for. A memorable evening all around. Thank you!More
My husband and I visited this restaurant off the recommendation of our hotel. The location was nice, located along the water. That was the only good thing, I’m afraid. We were seated and a solid 15 minutes went by before we were acknowledged. When the...waiter did come by, there was no greeting - he simply asked what we wanted. We decided to order the preset menu and went with the fish soup and the ravioli. The ravioli was quite good, the fish soup on the other hand was overly fishy and very salty. For mains, we both ordered fish dishes - pollack and sea bass. The sea bass arrived cold, overcooked and dry. We didn’t get to try the pollack, as the restaurant put in the wrong order and brought us chicken. Before food, we ordered a bottle of wine. Not once did the waiter come back to pour us wine - we had to serve ourselves the rest of the meal. No water was offered either. The desserts were both “okay” - pistachio ice cream (hard to mess up) and an eclair (found this to be dry and not super flavorful). The whole meal and the service was disappointing. Not worth the €120 we paid. We’d skip this place and try something else!More
This was a return visit to Chez Gilbert after 3 years. I remembered the fish soup as exceptional, and it did not disappoint this time. The waiter offered seconds for those who wanted more of this delicious soup. I followed up with an entree of eggs...scrambled with truffles and chestnuts. They were soft and ever so tasty. The waiters were friendly and attentive. The location is superb. I would heartily recommend this restaurant.More
Recommended by our hotel and seemed to offer an authentic version of bouillabaisse much loved by people of this region. My family loves fish but we could not eat the bouillabaisse. The flavor of the soup and all the elements was extremely fishy and for...us, not remotely appetizing. Nothing like the version I enjoyed 20 years ago in another region. I would add that the other fish dish we ordered lacked flavor, the side of risotto was also poor and there was not a salad on the menu.More
Yep! Go in. Given the number of available customers, this place has absolutely no need to be this good to turn a profit!! I had the bouillabaisse, my wife the John Dory… she finished hers with a refined smile… I was totally beaten by the...generosity, but it was everything you’d hope from a Bouillabaisse! Now I’m going for a lie down!!More
Main course Fish fine, starters seemed to be sitting around unrefrigetated so left them. Desserts a bit poor and cheap bought in. If you stick to simple fish it's great.
This restaurant has a superb view of the tiny port of Cassis. The service and food wonderful despite a notable lack of waiters. Despite this we were well looked after, the wine wonderful [Le Paternel, Esprit de Famille) and the bouillabaisse superbe. The owner was...extremely nice and professional and recommended the wine (which was excellent). Highly recommend! A magical eveningMore
We spent two weeks in Provence with friends, and one of them wanted to eat genuine French bouillabaisse, so we drove to the lovely seaside village of Cassis to fulfill his wish. We made reservations online for Chez Gilbert and one order of bouillabaisse and...arrived about noon. We were seated outside and it was a beautiful September day. My friend did indeed enjoy his authentic bouillabaisse, and we ate delicious lobster. The food was great, and the service was good. Mission accomplished!More
Really good dishes, amazing service... Don t hesitate to go there... One of the best restaurant at Cassis
The restaurant was recommended by our hotel. It was just ok . The food was fine but the service was not so great - slow and bordering on indifferent. Lots of of other restaurants to choose from in town for a more pleasant experience.
Our hotel recommended Chez Gilbert. Supposidly bouillabaisse was reputed to be best in town. I made a reservation and arrived exactly when the place opened. Very cool reception which became worse when waiter refused to take our order because we did not speak French! Waited...one solid hour with little attention while other diners received their meals. My wife's appetizer arrived but no bouillabaisse (55 euros!) for me, no answers to several requests for service, and finally water with bread. Head person neglected our requests for our order; I finally told him I would pay for her appetizer and left. A TERRIBLE, EMBARRASSING EXPERIENCE that was totally unexpected. After Trip Advisor rec, this is very disappointing. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!More
