We arrived for a late lunch and were warmly welcomed by the staff. Their english was limited but was enough to help us order as menus are in German. We tried Bambergs famous smoked beer (locals drink it for breakfast) not a favour\rite of mine, I preferred the white beer. To eat there was 4 f us and we chose... More

Dined here fot lunch on Easter weekend. The place was packed so we were seated at a table of two other German couples. We ordered the smoked trout which was Gluten Free and I had the Bierhaxe, the pork knuckle braized in beer. To follow the beer theme I had a famous smoked beer, or Rauchbier. It was all extremely... We dined here on April 8th at around 8 pm. I am writing that as I hope the manager sees this and is able to address our experience with the server; she was our worse experience at any restaurant in Germany. We really enjoyed the food, and the smoked beer was delicious. But the service was downright hostile, and we... More

As this was a last minute trip we did not read much ahead (I know) about where to eat and stumbled upon this place looking to have a late afternoon beer. Oh WOW. Yes, we stopped in for the drink and then asked if we could stay for dinner having seen what people were receiving. I have been coming to... More

This is a great place to meet friends, have coffee and cake, and plan what to see next. You see people of all ages and backgrounds, all chatting while enjoying. I sat at a table waiting for a friend when a couple asked if they could join me. I had a delightful conversation and when my friend joined us we... More

We went for dinner here with no expectations, and were blown away. It's not super fancy but full of flavour. Prices were reasonable and wine and beer were delicious! It was so good we went back a second night. We found at a few other places we were not treated very well for not speaking German (we tried). Not here... More

On this trip to Bamberg we ate at only casual beer restaurants w typical menu. Every night a different place. That was the idea. Of all the places I thought this had the best food. The decor was familiar old world German pub. Service very good. Not 3 stars, but 3 circles. Shared tables as common here. Had nice chat... More

I will recomend the traditional foods. Basically with meat and the famous circle potato. In this zone the beers are very good. I will recomend the visit of Bamberg during the Sandkerva at final of August.

Authentic atmosphere-feel, sit with the locals and enjoy really good German food -"get to the point" waitresses. Trout was excellent, juicy pork meat with sides of sauerkraut & boiled potatos, the apple dessert (local speciality) was fantastic - crispy baked slices - YUM. Very affordable for the 4 of us, 3 course dinner with a round of smoked beer & local white wine with main course @ Euro 22/pp.

Actually this is less a question and more a comment to you about the staff at the Katchelofen. I know the owner and did know the staff (as of a few years ago) and the place is far from rude. I am sorry that you had a bad experience with that particular waitress, but instead of getting on a website and land blasting it, telling people to never go there, maybe you should have asked to speak to the manager.

As for them "reserving good service for native Germans" this is a complete and utter falsehood.. my husband and I are Americans, and we were treated so well that when we left Germany they actually gave me a card signed by the whole staff and a beer mug and the owner and some of the waitstaff cried with me over the fact that we wouldn't be seeing each other anymore. These people were so friendly in fact that when my sister came to visit us while we lived in Germany, we were excitedly approached by one of the waitresses at the Christmas Market and she hugged MY SISTER who she didn't even know, but said that she would love just because she was my sister. Then she insisted on taking her to meet the staff who was on duty at the restaurant, and they fed us for FREE.

And before you go saying that my German must have been really good or something, I barely speak the language ... just a few sentences, because no matter how much I understand I just can't speak it. Has it occurred to you at all, that MAYBE just MAYBE you were putting off the unfriendly vibes because you were... as you said "forced" go there because everywhere else was to full? As for the food being average, that is your opinion... and I can't say anything about that... other than I will disagree with you and I have eaten at a lot of places all over Germany and grew up with a Germany Father who was an Executive Chef.
