At the end of our trip to Carinthia, we visited the Kirchenwirt in Lienz and had a sensational culinary experience. For starters, we had a stunning beef tartare that would have deserved 5 stars on its own. For the main course, we had fillets of venison with polenta and bacon beans; my companion had the spinach dumplings. I don't really have the words to describe this sensational menu; everything was simply first class. It should really be 10 stars.

The Kirchenwirt is a little off the pedestrian zone, but is definitely worth a visit.
Friendly hosts and a very tasty tartar rounded off the evening. In general, it must be said that the beer was also tasty and the menu had a variety of dishes.
Highly recommended!

A so-called wienerscnitzel that was a slice of meat with a soggy breading, the worst I've ever eaten, with potato salad that was actually boiled potatoes. Only dumplings are good. Price obviously exaggerated x what it offers, very far from the center. Not to be repeated

Local just outside the center of Lienz with an outdoor paved garden in which we had dinner. We had the mixed Tyrolean barbecue and two children's menus. Nothing exceptional, but still abundant and satisfying meat.
Times to have the dishes slow enough, but the place was full. Average count, friendly staff.

Lovely food, atmosphere and service. We enjoyed the garlic soup, schnitzel and strudel. Delicious! And it was child-friendly but foodie enough. :)

A nice restaurant with a lovely garden and a wide choice of dishes, including season vegetables and meat. Prices are moderate.

It’s well worth walking 10 minutes outside the town to find this gem of a restaurant. It’s in a quiet, ‘backwater’ area of town but the meal we had was pretty exceptional. There’s a small menu before 6pm which we found perfectly adequate for what we wanted. The dishes we chose were well beyond anything we’d found in town. Fresh salads and vegetables accompanied the fish and pork that we selected. A welcome change to the heavy mid winter food that you often find in this area at this time of the year. The starter of beef soup and dumpling was light but tasty. We plumped for the selection of desserts on offer and swooped on them like birds of prey. They were delicious. The lack of an English menu was to be recommended for us as it meant local produce, cooked well for locals rather than tourist type meals. The service was prompt but we had time to enjoy our meal although the restaurant was busy. Do yourself a favour and go the extra 10 minutes to get some great food at amazingly good prices. Three beers, three glasses of wine, a starter, two mains and a shared mixed dessert for €63. Incredible value, great service, fabulous food, lovely restaurant...what more does a traveller want?

The waiter was very welcoming and went out of his way to translate the menu for us. He brought a complimentary starter of cream of ginger and carrot soup. The main courses too were excellent and the vanilla pancakes served with strawberries and ice cream were delicious. We tried to return the following evening (Tuesday) but found the restaurant closed unfortunately.

Not really located in the centre of Lienz, but if you find it you will be spoiled with good traditional food.

Food was ok. Also nice local, handmade desserts. Be aware that between 2pm and 6pm they have limited offer of food.

Kirchenwirt is situated a bit out of center, near town church and cementary, and has nice terrace with stream passing by. Food is very good - we had spare ribs, and beef rolls. Both dishes are good for recommending, and portions are plentiful. Thumbs up for this establishment.
