Easily the best restaurant in Tulum for fine dining. The hostess at the front was not only friendly, but efficient too (something lacking in many other places). The restaurant itself does not really start where you see the bar, but about 5 metres further in. The tables are set among tropical plants, and not too cramped. Music is soft and gentle, and basically you do not hear all the rave music or traffic coming from the main road. Very peaceful and sophisticated. The manager and waiters are very careful to explain this fine dining concept, which is all about savouring Mexico, both in terms of dishes and ingredients (all sourced from Mexico). They were very kind, and attentive throughout the meal. Excellent. The menu fits on one page, and there are probably about 15 options for starters and main courses. But my are they amazing. Each plate is carefully crafted to showcase a part of Mexico, and get the most out of the ingredients. Wine list was small, but very high quality Mexican wines and at a decent price. In fact, prices are very similar to other restaurants which are trendy in the vicinity. We were in Tulum for three nights, tried this on our second night and decided to come again on our last night. It’s not often you come across such quality across all parameters in a restaurant (especially in Tulum). I would definitely recommend if the above sounds appealing.

High end restaurant on the beach strip. We were seated in the garden in a beautiful jungle setting. The service was excellent from start to finish. We started off with cocktails and ended up ordering other rounds as they were exceptionnaly good. The owner and waiters are very passionate and took the time to explain the menu in minute details, all ingredients locally sourced and coming from all over Mexico! We ordered the clams as a starter (generous portion to share), the shrimps (incredible sauce) and the roasted piglet. It was all very flavourful and nicely presented. The music matched perfectly the vibe of the restaurant. Dishes vary between 350 to 450 pesos and are definitely worth it. Highly recommend for a nice evening out in Tulum

I’ve had my fair share of dinners on the Tulum beach strip and this is by far the worst food I’ve had here and the prices are similar to those at higher end restaurants. We got one of the salads to start which was a small portion of greens which we waited 20+ minutes for. The server let us know food was taking longer than usual since they had to cut down staff due to covid but that was a bit excessive given there was only one other table at the same time. I got the dish with the turkey because the server recommended it’s one of the most authentic Mexican dish and it came with mashes banana and mole. The turkey was so dry I choked on it! It was like swallowing sand!! My boyfriend got the ribs which were also overcooked.

Quick and to the point: We had a lovely "experience" last night for dinner! "Experience," because the atmosphere (you are basically eating in a jungle setting) and the background, LOW (hate loud!) music. The service was outstanding and Alejandro, our waiter, could not have been more attentive to our needs/wants and explained every dish in detail. The food was amazing! We were a party of 8 (family members from Sweden and New York) and between all of us we probably sampled a good amount of the dishes on the menu, which is not huge, but eclectic and fabulous. All ingredients, including the wine, are from Mexico and some notable dishes were the octopus, the shrimp, the pork belly confit, the smoked short rib, and the desserts - all of them! You should definitely make this place a destination when you are in Tulum!

First time I’ve been in Tulum, and I never expected to have such culinary food here. This restaurant have an amazing environment starting with the sense of nature surronding all the tables, good music that makes you feel in peace. The attention was incredible also. The food was really amazing, the octopus and the duck 10/10. As they bring the food to the table they explain to you all the process it takes to have this delicious plate. All the plates I tried that is on my pictures had an explosion of flavors, really tasty. For sure the best restaurant I’ve been in Tulum.

Hands down our best meal in Tulum. The restaurant is set in a open space filled with greenery. We were first greeted by the manager who explained the concept of the restaurant, including the exclusive use of ingredients sourced in Mexico. We were then shepparded through the experience by our waiter Jonathan who invested an incredible amount of time to make us feel welcome, walk us through the menu, offer suggestions, enthusiastically discuss local and regional cuisines, and take the time to explain the concept and content of each of the very innovative dishes. We felt truly treated as guests! The ingredients and preparation of all three courses were of a very high quality. But above all, the overall experience was unique and unforgettable. Thank you Jonathan for making our meal a special experience.

We ate here our last night in Tulum, and wish we would have had a chance to eat here again it was sooo good! When you walk in you feel like you are entering the jungle, with candles and lighting all around it’s very romantic! We had a group of 5 and they took great care of us. The manager Antonio was amazing and kept checking on us to explain each of the uniques dishes they brought out. We loved hearing about the local ingredients creatively presented in each dish. All mouth watering with chocolate clams, red snapper, salted shrimp, and a few other dishes that were all outstanding! The cocktails were also some of the best we had in Tulum!

BAL NAK’! where to begin! This restaurant was amazing! Cute little opened space surrounded by jungle trees. They bring out some type of smoke around the tables which keeps the bugs away. A group of 4 came here to celebrate a birthday. The staff was so friendly! They explained the menu and offered suggestions. When our cocktails came out and were lit on fire I knew we choose a great place. We had the cauliflower for an appetizer. The sauce was so good. I had the pig for dinner which was also amazing. We also got a special birthday dessert. You might not find this restaurant on the travel blogs yet but you should, because this place was sooo much better than other popular restaurants people rave about. Definitely check it out!

Intimate ambience in the jungle of Tulum beach with delicious food & drinks! All food is sourced in Mexico & they do a great job explaining each dish & where the food came from. The staff members were very passionate & it showed! The drinks were unique & delicious. I loved the Xibalba, which they lit on fire & this alcohol infused coffee I had with dessert. My boyfriend had the pork belly & the grilled octopus, which he loved. I’m vegetarian & had the roasted beet as an appetizer, which was good, but not the best beer dish I’ve had. They don’t have a vegetarian option on the menu, however, the chef created something especially for me. I didn’t ask what, I just let them surprise me & I was very impressed. I’ve never had such an experience with vegetables before with multiple different flavors on one dish, but the highlight of the meal was definitely the coconut dessert! For me, it’s one of those restaurants where you are completely present in enjoying your meal, closing your eyes for every bite & the staff members attentiveness made it even more enjoyable. Thanks Bal Nak for the great experience!

when we first arrived, they were smoking out the mosquitoes, we almost could not stay it was so smoky. started coughing and eyes started watering to the point we were leaving. our server came to the rescue and moved the smoke and moved us to a better table. once the smoke cleared, it is just a lovely space. The server was really knowledgable about the food, the manager (or owner) was a little militant towards his staff (they seemed too frightened to say or do anything that might anger him). Tiradito was absolutely yummy, amazing flavors. The chocolate clams not so much, there was so much stuff in the shell, I didn't know if there was a clam in there. the suckling pig was fantastic with amazing flavors. the dessert was Ok, the chocolate cake was a little dry, the coffee/chocolate cake on top was better but the coffee bean pieces were not edible they were so hard.

Don’t let the quiet bar out front deceive you, this place is worth a stop. Antonio, the owner, is so attentive and warm. He took the time to explain the menu and the background of Bal Nak (everything is local — down to the liquor used in their amazing craft cocktails!). Jonathon, our server, and all of the staff on that night were helpful and knowledgeable. The FOOD! Wow. We had a group of six and shared bites of lobster, the catch of the day, loin steak with black garlic, and a wonderful broccoli and cauliflower dish. We finished every bite and couldn’t stop raving about it. The backyard is like paradise. A must go while you’re in Tulum!

Honestly - based on all the other reviews, I feel like I need to give this place another try? We ate here on our second night in Tulum. Unfortunately it was raining so we had to sit right next to the bar and then a large party came in and took up the remaining covered seats. We did peek at the garden seating in the back and it did look lovely! (I guess reschedule if it's raining?) The cocktails were good, and our food was fine. We ordered the Grilled Broccoli and the Smoked Short Ribs. The broccoli had nothing special going on to warrant the $15 price tag besides the fact that it was arranged nicely...it didn't even taste grilled. The short rib was somehow both fatty and tough. The servers were all very nice and accommodating on account of the rain, and they offered bug repellent for a more enjoyable time. Could be that we just had a miss on our menu selections that night!

Dined at Bal Nak in September 2020 during covid-19 and the restaurant was taking every precaution to be safe without compromising quality. They took temperatures upon arrival, provided hand sanitizer and all staff properly wore a mask. The food and cocktails are creative and delicious! They even send a bartender to the table to ensure you get exactly what you want. Great service, great jungle chic ambiance. Verde jungla cocktail is amazing! Would recommend! Good for date nights or groups.
