Great setting in a side street. We sat out on the pavement style side street. I had lovely fresh oysters which came with a fresh zesty dressing. Beware though the main course portions are huge!

We ate here as the setting was so lovely but after sitting down and looking at the menu more closely it was all pretty dull fare. We ordered entrees only. They were alright but uninspiring and a bit greasy. Wouldn't eat there again with so many other great options nearby.

Don't even consider visiting this venue. My wife and visited there for breakfast on the weekend. We were there a few years ago and thought it was ok for lunch so we thought give it a go for breaky. Ordered a large cappuccino and was given as small one and the same for my wife. I had buttermilk pancakes with... More

We had just arrived in Melbourne from interstate and needed lunch. We wandered around town for a while and then decided to try Hardware Lane. The guy outside Pop 'spruiked' us in with the promise of good food and a free soft drink and ice cream for the kids. I had the mussels (very small but yummy, although VERY garlicky!),... More

Firstly let me say that the food was decent. Not amazing but decent if not a little overpriced. The service however was poor. Our waiter couldn't have looked less pleased to be serving us. When we were ordering he made unhelpful and irrelevant suggestions and then proceeded to bring me the wrong meal. My friends ate and my meal finally... More

We had once been to the restaurant before and the food and service was very good and because we had such a good experience we took our friends there the second time and that's where it all went wrong. Our friends were visiting us and at dinner time, we recommended Pop Restaurant to them. Like the other reviewers mentioned, staff... More

If you need someone outside trying to get customers in the door, it's always a bad sign. Against my better judgment, I went in anyway, as the spruker told me the cafe had won best cafe on the street 6 years in a row. I would say the reality was, they won worst restaurant of the year. Similar to other... More

We headed here for a Sunday breakfast. Hardware Lane is full of cafés, with chairs & tables spilling out into the lane. The menus are full of similar breakfast choices - so without any local knowledge my girlfriend based our choice based on how inviting the chairs and tables looked - that and the convincing patter of the Irish spruiker.... Set down Hardware Lane , amongst other restaurants, in a lively atmosphere. We were enticed in by a handsome young Irish lad 😉 and received a free drink each and bruschetta on the house. Our main meals were reasonably priced and delicious

Friendly, upbeat restaurant with a great menu. However, I ordered lamb shank with vegetable ratatouille and mash potatoes. My dinner was served sans the ratatouille. When I questioned the server, he did not believe it was included. After he looked at the menu, he told me they discontinued the ratatouille, and offered to bring mixed vegetables. The vegetables never came,... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
