Turned up to a large group of people waiting for tables. Approached the front of house for a table for 2. Had a short wait on the street until our table was available. Worth the wait. Great fried brioche, pork belly, coffee and iced chocolate.

Three of us went to Hardware Societe around 11am, there was a long line, the lady told us to come back in an hour. The wait is worth it, the food is well presented and taste is superb. The place is really packed, mostly teenagers and many tourists like us too. In other words, this resto is very inviting, cute... More

Having seen plenty of great reviews about the baked eggs this was on our list of places to try in Melbourne. We arrived around 11:15am expecting to wait but were seated straight away at a community table with 5 other people. I had the Chorizo Baked Eggs which were amazing and my husband had the Pork Belly and Eggs and... More

Think we went around 10am and there were already lots of people waiting outside. You need to give them your name to put on the waitlist. 30mins+ wait but was worth it when we got to the food. Very filling too. Baked eggs done well! I ordered DEUX

This cafe was recommended to us by our hotel concierge on a recent family trip to Melbourne. We had high expectations based on the online menu and the numbers of people waiting for a table outside the cafe for breakfast so on the third visit we decided to wait in the queue for 1/2hr until a table became available. What... More

The decor is modern & romantic. It's fairly busy so be prepared to wait. I had huge expectations as I love French food & breakfast ... so combining them is heaven. Presentation of food was perfect. However the lobster benedict (brioche bun) was ok, the baked eggs were overcooked & oily, the field mushrooms were watery & bland & the... More

We had brunch at the Hardware Society on a Saturday. Amazing options, everything tasted delicious, the service was pretty efficient. We got there early, but still had to queue - so probably not the best place to go if you're in a hurry. Well recommended though!

One of the best place for brunch in Melbourne. Coffee is good and price is average compared with other brunches, but the portion is descent. I always manage to come back here every now and then when I am in the area. Always bring guests from overseas to have their brunch here as number 1 place to go.

The massive line was well worth the wait, I can see why people flock here. The food is high quality and slightly funky.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
