The food and drink at The French Brasserie were excellent. I dined on a Friday at 6pm pre-theater, and I think that may explain why the service was so attentive it bordered on stalking. It wasn't that they checked in frequently but they stood about 15 feet away monitoring the tables so the servers were rarely out of view. By... More

Out for dinner without a reservation only to stumble on the French Brasserie. Great meal with excellent service. Outstanding wine list. Very pleasantly surprised.

The three hour meal we had was of good quality with great service. The wine list was extensive and reasonably priced.

I walked in here just on the off-chance of a table and was lucky. Service is very good from the genuine French staff. Food, as you would expect is quality with a price to match. This is not a budget night out. Potatoes gratin were excellent.

Great venue for a celebration, however it is expensive for what you get. So only go for the experience. I recommend the hot dipping cheese, the minute steak cooked medium/rare and a glass of wine. My friend had the lamb which was dry, so stick to the steak.

Hi DiscoveringMelb, Thanks for your review and recommendation about your visit. We're pleased to hear that there were elements of your visit you enjoyed, and the baked liquid lava esque cheese is as you mentioned - to die for. Wish I could rate this place higher! The atmosphere, staff, and food were beyond amazing. My fiancé had the faux fillet and I had the lamb - both were cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. Our waiter was exceptional, full of charm, and even helped us out reciprocating a bottle of wine which had been shouted for us by another... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
