I've had a morally difficult love affair with the European since first visiting it 10 years ago on the recommendation of the concierge of the Park Hyatt. I'm a vegan and this place does fois gras. Unfortunately for my me, they also make divine avocado on seed bread, gorgeous pastas and superlative coffee. I love the atmosphere, with the chequered... More

Friendly, busy place. Not cheap, but not overpriced. Excellent food, European wine list with some good bottles at reasonable prices. Don't miss the rocket/basil/zucchini salad. A masterpiece. Really.

The baked beans with ham hock was just awful. I had ordered it before and it was nice. This time, it was markedly different - it tasted of acrid tomato concentrate and the ham hock was nowhere to be seen. Plus it was unseasoned. Very disappointing. Also, before I ordered I asked the waitress if it was possible to get... More

Booked for a pre-show dinner at 6.15pm (recommend booking as restaurant becomes very busy). Unfortunately there was no paella on the menu this night, which was very disappointing, but on the upside it forced us to try other dishes on the menu. We started with a shared plate of duck carpaccio with pomegranate seeds and goat's cheese which was delicious.... More

Enjoyed a wine and nibbles after an afternoon show. Service was excellent so was the food. Expensive but enjoyable.

We walked here from Her Majesty's Theatre after a show for a nightcap and late night snack. We ordered oysters which were deliciously large and fresh. Our favourite was the serving of zucchini flowers that came with a touch of crab and honey and coriander. Yum! Yum! Delectable. If I had been hungry I would have ordered another plate. Highly... Truly great food and generous portions. We shared a foie gras and then he had rabbit done 3 interesting ways and I had the duck with radicchio. Truly superb. The sommelier was truly interested in wine and suggested wines to match. Unfortunately he didn't really like his Riesling, but my Rose was just right. Really good service and busy busy... More

A very busy place offering a good cuisine with a French accent. We had a veal rib that was quite good indeed, the octopus were okay but chewy, and the paella was all right. A very nice wines list is available to travel with your meal. Good service is provided, but definitely a busy and noisy experience.

I called into The European early on Saturday to have breakfast with a friend. The staff were really good considering it was early Saturday. Very accomodating and attentive. The food was good and the early morning ambience too. Great start to the day!

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
