This place has been open for decades serving consistently good quality japanese food. Good service and friendly staff.

I have eaten here on a couple of occasions when I have travelled to Melbourne for work. There is a good selection of Japanese favourites including sashimi and miso. Tempura is tasty and there are great tofu dishes.

I think we have eaten here half a dozen times the last being only two months ago. It is always a very pleasant meal and we have been more than satisfied with our choices every time. I recommend the sushi platter which is always fresh and generous. They have a good selection of wines and beers as well as an... More

Call ahead! There isn't any signage saying it's closed down but I visited on Thursday for dinner and it was shut. Pity as the other reviews sounded good.

Kuni is a 'quaint' Japanese restaurant incredibly convenient for business lunch. Fantastic service and attitude. I am a serial repeat visitor.

Good variety of lunch set menu. I ordered the bento box which includes salmon sashimi, chicken karage, tempura, beef sukiyaki, miso soup, pickles and rice. While it is more expensive than most other japanese lunch places ($19), the amount of food that's included makes it worth the value.

Very good and authentic Japanese food. I had the tempura vegetables and seafood, which was excellent. A pleasant, calm atmosphere (I was eating alone), and attentive service. I would certainly go back next time I am in Melbourne.

We had dined here previously on our last visit to Melbourne and thought it was worth a re-run. Happily we found that the food this year was even better than last time as was the service which was much more professional. Our meal was delicious and served very quickly. We will definitely visit again next year.

We used to live in Melbourne some 30 years ago and decided to revisit Kuni's during our visit back to this city. The food was still good but the menu has changed (not surprisingly after 30 years). In the ‘70s & ‘80s, there were more variety of sashimi and sushi, but it now seems like more about cooked food. Still,... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
