We turned up here just after it closed for the afternoon and my partner was so disappointed, so we went for Dinner. The lady there recognised us from early and was so apologetic. We had a delicious fish and chips meal and they even brought us vinegar knowing we were British and liked it. The meal also came with bread... More

Happened upon this place by accident - basic fitout but the fish and chips are to die for. They also came with a big plate of bread and butter - will definitely return here

Great to have choice of pan fried fish instead of battered. Staff were absolutely lovely and helpful (had 91 yr old Mother with us)

Nice lunch here with Blue Cod bites and bluff oysters which tasted great after a walk from the Dunedin railway station which is nearby.

Ordered blue cod and chips to takeaway. What we got was 3 small soggy bits of cod and 2 scoops undercooked chips. They were not busy so no excuse really. Used to be the best fish feed in town. Not any more. We won't be back.

We were down from Christchurch for the league on Friday night and upon many recommendations we popped in to the Best Cafe for a little dinner before the game. Dunedin was buzzing, and this little diner was no exception. The place was super busy and we were told there would be a slight wait for our meals but we found... More

I went for oysters, it is the season and all that. I always have a least one meal per season (well, probably more like 5 but shhhh). So off we went to Best Cafe for their old fashioned service and the bread and butter and the delicious oysters. And yes I had some and yes they were sooooo yummy -... More

Management response:

Thanks for your review Styly_Girl. I'm glad you popped down and had some oysters although I know they are pricey wee things! I do want you to know however that prices have not changed, although oysters have come in slightly more expensive this year. They have always been $27.50 for a half dozen meal at the cafe, at least the... More

My husband and I both had the blue cod and chips. The place was very busy and we only had to wait about 10 minutes and the food was amazing really good fish and chips. Would highly recommend.

This is an honest to goodness retro fish and chip shop, cans of pop, plastic tomato shaped ketchup dispensers, sliced white bread and butter and plastic table cloths. What brings it up to date is the wide choice of fish available (including fresh oysters), the option of one or two fish fillets and of pan frying for those watching their... More

Established in 1932 the "Best Cafe" has become a Dunedin icon. It has been through world war II and the great depression and has changed very little over the last 80 years it has been trading. My wife and I are privileged to be its third owners and have fell in love with a piece of Dunedin history. Our aim is to supply a great range of local fresh fish with our hand cut chips, also maintain our reputation as the Best oysters in New Zealand. If you remember the days when you used to get bread and rolled butter at the table as soon as you walked in, with feeds that never left you hungry then you will remember the "Best Cafe"
