An overall 'good' dining experience. We had high expectations for Rata and unfortunately in reality it fell slightly short of the mark. When we arrived the place was so hot it was stifling. The temperature was then turned down a bit which made dining more pleasant. And despite advising Rata when booking that one of our group, which consisted of... More

Had to wait for more than 1 hour between the courses. The restaurant is super loud - many very noisy big tables (10ppl & more)

Ate here after a fun day of bungee with best bud. Great way to celebrate. Had the Smoked Eel as a starter and was delish and smoky! Definitely get duck and lamb rump for dinner. The lamb rump was more flavored than the duck, but the duck leg was cooked perfectly for the melt in your mouth savory. Side of... More

Rata has a great reputation as the chef/owner behind it is Michelin Star chef Josh Emett. The restaurant is located on the quieter side of Queenstown with a relaxed, casual dining environment. The cuisine is fine contemporary mixed and beautifully presented. The cured salmon and slow cooked lamp rump were my favorite. Both perfect. Overall, the food was delicious and... More

We traveled for 2 weeks through Australia & New Zealand and this was my family's favorite restaurant on the entire trip, hands down! Beef Wellington was amazing! My husband and son shared the lamb. Would highly recommend!

We dined here with a large group and received royal treatment from Courtney and Miles. We were served in a 'feast' style and we all loved every dish. The organic chicken and the lamb shoulder received rave reviews, but the salted caramel dessert was a firm favorite. In my top five restaurants I've been fortunate to visit!

Absolutely loved my experience at Rata. I enjoyed dinner at the bar one evening on my recent trip to Queenstown. Despite having only two appetizers and a dessert, one of the best meals I've ever had. At the bartender's recommendation, I ordered the swordfish crudo with avocado, grapefruit, soy, and mirin. The flavor combination was exquisite. Also ordered the Southland... More

Travelled to Queenstown with 5 others (their 1st visit to NZ), Rata came highly recommended by winery friends. I booked way ahead as it was Waitangi Day and wasn't sure if it would be booked up; it was pretty easily done through their website as we were set. After 2 hearty BBQs, we were ready for something on the posh... More

Rata is a posh-ish place that a person feels good going in to. I was by myself but I didn't feel unwanted (which often happens). I liked being waited on, and having three nice courses, each course set out prettily on the plate. This restaurant has a serene ambience to it (until it gets full, then it's a boxful of... More

Description
Rata is a collaboration between internationally recognised Michelin starred & New Zealand Masterchef judge, Josh Emett and highly regarded local restaurateur, Fleur Caulton. Their company, Mayfare Limited, is fast becoming synonymous in New Zealand for creating genuine dining experiences that are contemporary and inspired.
'Uniquely Southern', Rata takes inspiration from the Southern landscapes and everything that epitomises New Zealand. The decor uses influences from the Otago scenery mixed with modern industrial elements and reclaimed & repurposed vintage items to create a uniquely contemporary and welcoming dining room.
Queenstown's cooler climate lends itself to Josh's love of slow cooked dishes and robust flavours, the discipline of his Michelin star background and that of Executive Chef Chris Scott who
heads up the Rata kitchen, ensures elegant well-balanced and inspired cuisine that always showcases the best of regional and seasonal produce.
The wine list proudly showcases wines from the Otago region and afar with a large selection of wines by the glass to give the diners variety, and match easily with the style of food.
Rata is a relaxed eating-house with a neighbourhood feel, excellent service and exceptional food. Located discreetly away from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown, tucked alongside heritage buildings with several dining spaces perfect for lunch, dinner and casual grazing.
Rata is the ideal place to unwind and enjoy award winning and genuine Southern hospitality.
