Nice atmosphere. Service was friendly and it looked busy. Although we only had drinks, the meals looked a decent size and it looked very family friendly.

This place has it all. quality of food, portions large, service great, location by ocean in town center. I would suggest all who are in the area to stop here , it is really worth it. It evens has a full bar if you only want a drink

The Whaler has delicious food and the beer is great. We didn't have the opportunity to try many other restaurants as there continue to be many establishments closed due to earthquake damage. Only downside is that the wifi only works in the bar area. Locations in the restaurant away from the bar cannot receive signal properly.

We ate here on recommendation of a local. There seemed to be a lot of locals which made it fun to chat some of them up. The food is OK, the beer selection pretty good. All in all, if you want to "eat like a local" this is your place. Mostly bar type food.

Ordered pasta of the day- vegetables; ordered with chicken only. What arrived was worthy of the rath of Gordon Ramsey; tasteless, ladened with bacon (specifically requested none), vegetables included cabbage! This just needs to taken off the menu; if can't do a basic pasta dish; just dont bother. The burgers seem to be a better option.

Very busy but not too bad for a Thursday evenings dinner. Lots of good beer and wine and the steak was devine and very well priced. My wife, who is not a big eater, had a kids meal of ribs and said it was delicious

Had our evening meal every night at this place. Once taking it out being a premium hamburger. Out of this world. I could not fault these meals at all. Every night we had something different & ate at the bar tables, the window or the restaurant. Fantastic place, good active young staff, all friendly and helpful.

The Whaler was just down the road from the White Morph and therefore very convenient. We had a couple of beers and then ate their fish (hoki) & chips which were fab. No problems at all and we would be very happy to return.

I just wanted to head up the road for a couple of hours and do my bit to to help out the local economy after a pretty rubbish start to the tourist season for them. I'd been to The Whaler before with my family so I thought I'd give it another go. Mussels to die for the first night and... More

This Restaurant / Bar offers fair pricing on meals which are well prepared and presented. We dined twice because it was convenient. Both times the food was Very Good. Reasonable value for money. The setting is spartan, greasy spoon, classic NZ Booze Barn, and very noisy. The staff, obviously backpackers, are not here because they enjoy what they are doing.... More
