Of the many restaurants we've experienced on 8th street, Barracks Row, Lavagna is our favorite. We're possibly a bit biased because we love Italian cuisine. The two of us had the Pappardelle Lamb, the Rigatoni Pesto with Italian Sausage, and a spinach side. The pastas were exceptionally good. Both the pasta dishes were delicious- well conceived and prepared. The spinach... More

My daughters (ages 18 & 20) and I dined at Lavagna on a recent college tour trip. Both my daughters can be picky eaters. They loved their meals of Spaghetti Bolognese & Rigatoni Pesto with chicken. Sadly, there was a kitchen mix up and my lobster risotto did not arrive with their orders. A food runner gave me two giant... More

We went with six adult family members and had a really fun evening. All of us were very happy with our food. The home made pasta is excellent and the charcuterie boards are interesting and great for a large group. This food is above average and definitely worth checking out.

I ordered a primavera pasta and my friend ordered lamb. Both came looking rather dark which I found unappetizing. But they tasted ok. Mushrooms were particularly good. Service was efficient. Bread basket was stale.

Anniversary celebration, with local children, who live in DC. They gave us several dining choices, but location between both kids' residence dictated this establishment!! Only full reservation allowed to be seated... might be standard, but as an old person, would have appreciated beings seated, instead of standing, attempting to truly enjoy our early glass of vino. Full party arrived, within... More

I was able to make reservations for our large group online. They called to confirm that morning and we were seated fairly quickly after arriving. Everyone enjoyed the food and the service was fast. I would defiantly com here again, even if they didn't have bottomless mimosas.

Our daughter chose the restaurant because she had been before and had liked it very much. It is a cozy space with the tables far enough apart to allow privacy and it's quiet enough to hear each other. We were not disappointed! The pasta was excellent! I had bolognese sauce on spaghetti and my husband asked for penne with garlic... More

I am hard on Washington restaurants and the lack of good service at many of them. The servers tend to be curt and unfriendly. Not so with Lavagna, one of the great 8th street Southeast restaurants. The happy hour is from 4-7 in the upstairs bar and the house red wine is excellent. We had a bruschetta appetizer which was... More

We visited on a busy Friday night but got a table quickly. The homemade pastas we tried, bologese and a pesto rigatoni, were yummy. They also have a very good wine list. Service was attentive and not rushed.

My friends recommended it, on a Saturday night. We made a reservation for 7:45pm. I arrived first and was promptly seated at a table for 4 by the window. Beautiful. The food was very tasty. We had the salad special of the evening as a starter, and then I had another of the specials of the evening, the Baramundi (... More

Lavagna opened with a concept to keep food simple, fresh, and Italian, and now one of DC’s exciting new culinary talents has taken over the burners at Lavagna. Executive Chef Alex Ripley was lured to DC by the booming culinary region where his passion for this industry and for food could easily be recognized. Lavagnas’ team is excited to progress with its newest addition. ‘Farm to table’ is an essential drive of this Virginia born chef. A good portion of his life was spent growing up in the Northern Neck of Virginia; which has instilled a lifelong passion for fresh and locally sourced cuisine. Chef Ripley went on to study the culinary arts at Johnston and Wales, where he learned to develop his own unique style and flair. He continued with his career at many restaurants along the East Coast; Morgan Creek Grill on the Isle of Palms in Charleston, SC, Solas in Raleigh, NC and The Founders Inn Hampton Roads, VA, but began his career as Executive Chef at The Mooring in Kinsale, VA.“The complexity of food begins here in the kitchen,” says the Chef, with an idea, and blossoms into something beautiful with only a few movements of a knife, the stir of a spoon, the sizzle of olive oil, and the commitment to provide delicious culinary treats seasoned with passion and the love of food. My philosophy stands true to this day, ‘Italian Inspired and Locally Created,’ - a process that can only begin with fresh local ingredients, sourcing the best of what is available locally throughout the seasons”“Outgoing and passionate about his culinary vision; Chef Ripley has such energy, enthusiasm and passion for his craft,” Owner, Stephen Cheung. “We are thrilled to welcome him to our team and share our passion for the culinary world.”
