We had a reservation for 5:45 in the bar on a Saturday night. There was only one other couple there when we arrived. This was surprising since it seemed very difficult to get a reservation at any time. The bar was actually a very nice...More

Great dining choices, a decent wine list that is sometimes very good, and wonderful service, in a uniquely historical, stately venue

Came here for a special occasion dinner. Food was good but not spectacular as expected. I had rack of lamb which was good but overpriced. Wife had pork and found it pedestrian at best. Neither of us impressed with menu selection that night. Place is...More

The food here is good but not outstanding but they really take care of customers, and that makes all of the difference (compare by recent, bad experience at Fiola, which I don't recommend, and you will see what I mean.) I would definitely go back.

Went to 1789 with my wife. We had booked in advance but the table they gave us was adjacent to where staff go to take payments and walk through from one section of the restuarant to the other. Not a good table location with the...More

A high-end restaurant both in price and in quality of food and service. I had the chef's tasting menu -- oysters, seared foie gras, scallops, duck , followed by chocolate pistachio as dessert. Every single item was cooked to perfection (not overcooked or undercooked), and...More

Intimate place and food was delicious. Nice wine list. Be aware that there are several dining rooms, and that there are steep stairs to many of them. I thought it added to the ambiance. NOTE: If walking, do NOT take M Street to 36th Street....More

I visited 1789 for the first time during Restaurant Week. Normally not my style of eatery, but considered "worth the price," I thought it'd be worth visiting during Restaurant Week so I could decide if it was worth returning to for other meals in the...More

I had no jacket, but most men did. And, the restaurant was a bit cold. I must add that the food was really mediocre, so I would recommend against going, no matter how you're dressed.
