The food is exquisite ... as it should be at this price level. The service was friendly and helpful. The ambience was a little subdued on this occasion as there were only two other couples eating dinner (a bit surprising for Thursday evening). Well worth a visit and return visits.

While you can order ala carte, the most interesting experience at Makoto is to try the eight course Omakase' menu. The chef prepares seasonal foods into exquisite offerings of taste, texture, scent and arrangement to bring you a lovely and relaxing evening. I cannot stress enough that this is more than dinner out. It is an experience. The decor is... More

Call to ensure they serve sushi, otherwise enjoy the expensive, well prepared, cooked fare. Not sure if the food reaches the haughty heights of staff attitude, though.

This is an experience for your palate. Tokyo's best competitor is right here on McArthur boulevard. The service is impeccable, your glasses are never left empty and seldom will you have the chance to serve yourself for the staff is attentive, courteous and silent. The food, prepared only a few feet away from you is fresh, it is served on... More

Sushi bar has room for about ten and tables can seat another 16-20 maximum. This is a cozy authentic Japanese experience, beginning when you enter and must exchnage your street shoes for slippers. The female servers are dressed in traditional dress and the music is soothing jazz swing from an earlier era. But the sushi is the real star of... More

My partner and I finally made it up to Makoto after a long time of wanting to go. It was an amazing meal and one of the best restaurants in DC. It was surprisingly not too hard to get a reservation here, calling on Sunday and getting something on Wednesday night. The vibe and decor of this place is very... More

Small, spartan atmosphere. But fantastic food. Service good and friendly but in poor English. Hard to understand some of the explanations. The 8 course menu was really well put together. And I liked the smallness and simplicity of the lay out of the restaurant. But what was the deal with jazz music?

First went here in the mid-1990s when it was one of the first innovative omakase restaurants in DC. Still reliable even though not quite as unusual. Delicious eight-course omakase includes sashimi, sushi, shabu shabu, salad. Pair it with warm or cold sake. Standard menu without the add-ons is perfect. Great ambience for quiet conversation. Service is impeccable.

Let's start with the non-fantastic: the place is small and cramped in a basement; getting a reservation is a challenge; the demeanor may be appropriate in Japan but is no totally comfortable in the US at that price point; a touch of attempts to upsell but I may have misinterpreted what we were being told because of the accent; a...
