This is a great place to go for unusual Mexican fare. However it is a bit crowded with seating. The bar is better. But food terrific. Locals go there a lot.

Fresh Flavors and great service in a bright and colorfully decorated Central American style restaurant. I enjoyed the chips and salsa and a beer and followed it with some really good ceviche. Although every thing was priced a little high, I expected as much from an up class downtown spot. I ended up trying a couple of tacos as well... More

We decided to pop into Oyamel after passing by the day before and watching the table-side quac service. We had an early weekend lunch and splurged for the table-side quac (which we devoured), along with a few of the recommendations that our waitress gave. We both had the homemade juices (raspberry grapefruit and blackberry) which were to die for. I... More

Food is hit or miss and for the prices they charge for these small plates. Very disappointing. Since I like Jaleo and Zatinya and been to those places many times, I thought Andres' mexican focused joint would be equal to the task. Sadly, no. Some friends went two weeks ago and felt the same.

I have to say I'm mexican. So when I travel in the US I normally go for the foods I crave. This restaurant's decor is very pleasant, the service is good and I had a Nopal asado (spicy hot but good) and 3 fish tacos. i'd eat there every day if I could. Bravo chef josé

Came for lunch mid-week. After the noon rush, so not too busy. We waited a very long time to get someone to come to our table to take drink order. Weird because it was pretty empty- only a few tables were full. Ordered queso- it was like a blob of boring cheese and the corn tortillas with it were not... More

From the outside, it looks like a nice resturant - then you enter a wonderland of imagery! Wow! Wonderfully decorated, with a warm atmosphere! It accommodated large groups and small parties. The food matched the ambiance - delicious and spirited. Definitely worth the experience. Our server was well knowledgeable about the menu and added to greatness of the experience!

Amazing bar with cheerful vibe. Great fresh fruit drinks and the only place in DC with authentic Mexican Hot Chocolate. Service is always friendly despite the place being packed every night. Go at 5:45 to secure good bar spot or for late night.

Had made a reservation with Oyamel about 1 month before visiting Washington. Was looking forward to this visit so much as had eaten in a couple of Jose Andreas restaurants before. That excitement was short lived! Apparently they don't serve alcohol to anyone who 'looks' under 35 unless they have ID. I had ID but unfortunately my friend hadn't. So... More

Tasty tapas style dishes....not really suitable for sharing....I wanted the whole dish. Expensive but it's DC. Unique dishes with a authentic Mexican taste. Watch the beverages-- They pack a punch and could sneak up on you. Two sides -- restaurant and bar side.....after work place to "UNWIND"

Description
Oyamel combines Mexico's rich regional diversity with the modern urban atmosphere of Mexico City. The liveliness of the dining room is matched by the creativity of the menu and cocktail list, featuring antojitos-Mexican small plates-ceviches and tacos, plus unique margaritas, and an impressive array of wines and tequilas.

Originally opened in 2004 in the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Oyamel moved to its current home in the Penn Quarter in March of 2007.
