We came here after reading recommendations from an online travel blog but also from the lonely planet book and we’re not disappointed. The queue full of locals was down the street. Pork knuckle and braised pork with rice on the menu served with an egg....The pork was honestly one of the most delicious portions I’ve tried since being in SE Asia. The service is efficient and the staff are very friendly. The prices are also reasonable and you can choose from a medium / large portion. Would definitely recommend if in chiang maiMore

This is a food cart located in an area allocated for street food near to the Northern gate of the old City. The lady owner is famous for wearing her distinctive straw hat and also was visited and recommended by the late Anthony Bourdain. The...signature pork was very well braised and was falling apart when you bite in. The meat was juicy and tender. They offer a homemade chilli sauce which brings out and enhances the flavours of the meat.More

The cowboy hat lady came to my attention after watching Anthony Bourdain’s episode from Chiang Mai when he was hitting up town with famous chef Andy Ricker. This stall is located close to the North Gate. The cowboy hat lady specializes in khao kha moo,...which is braised pork leg. The dish is served over rice and stewed Chinese broccoli as well as a boiled duck egg. The meat flavorful and fall of the bone tender. Glad I got the chance to try it.More

Located at north gate (Chang phuak), late night street food open up to 2 am. Not the best, very average compared to options in Bangkok eg Saeng Silom. Unlimited veg is available . Cowgirl has great PR but is no more serving. Her replacement is...not wearing a hat, but biz is not abating. Tourists from China continue to swarm the outlet. Some western visitors can’t take the skin and fat, which is a delicacy for others. Personally, it is a late night supper option for me after visiting the jazz club by the gate. Prefer the sukiyaki stall at same location.More

Overrated. Wouldn't recommend travelling there just for the braised pork leg. The meat wasn't braised long enough, the meat wasn't tender and the skin was rubbery. Food may or may not be served hot depending on whether you get a freshly prepared plate or one...that has been left on the table for awhile. Servers were impatient, walks away before we convey all our orders. Cowboy Hat lady was there just to collect big notes (500/1000 baht) from her servers. Food preparation done by her sister instead.More

As you can see from previous reviews the Cowboy Hat lady was elevated to far after a visit from Anthony Bourdain. Even with the varied reviews I found this place fun, the pork really tasty and very inexpensive. Af for the cleanliness..... everything is relative...and overall I found Chiang Mai to be much cleaner then Bangkok overall.Sometimes you have to experience things just because..... Also there are some other great food carts in the area. After we ate dinner we had fried banana spring roll....so yummy!!More

Food is okay taste wise, but stall is very dirty and quite expensive. I went there because of the cowboy hat lady who has a reputation of preparing excellent stew. The hygienic state and food handling is appalling even for street food standards.

If you come to Chiang Mai you MUST eat here. Very very very teasty pork and if you don't like spicey food, is perfect!!

I can’t come to Chiang Mai without thinking of Tony B.; a man I admired for having what I considered the best job in the world. The Cowboy Hat Girl was one of Tony’s stops and tonight I returned to visit her for the first...time since his passing. As you approach her roadside stand the first thing you notice after you’re able to take your eyes off this statuesque woman, adorned in a brilliant cowboy hat is a huge pan heaped with stewed pork, locally know as Khao Kha Moo. This place is as popular as the Cowboy Hat Lady is famous and you need to be strategic with your arrival time or the lines can be massive. You place your order for pork which comes with rice and hard boiled eggs. Behind the cook station are rows of community tables and plastic stools. On the tables are buckets of soda. The honor system is in play here. You self serve your beverage if you want one and shortly after you’re seated an employee will come by and take your money. The pork is absolutely tender and delicious. The eggs and rice are good as well but the pork is the star, no contest. It’s a light meal that sells for $ 60 baht (2 bucks). If you want a second plate, don’t get back in line; just flag down one of the employees working the crowd; they’ll get it for you and you should show your appreciation with a modest tip. For me, this is a must when in Chiang Mai. I like to think Tony is smiling down at that top of that Cowboy Hat saying “you go girl.” 😎More

cowboy hat lady certainly deserve her reputation,,, good portion of pork trotters with an soft cooked egg, sauce over rice,,, even seniors will not complain of the meat texture. Very prompt service, no queue, they also serve intestines, good pricing...

This lives up to the hype! We couldn’t find it at first in the market because the iconic “cow boy hat lady” was in the back chatting with some customers - if you are having a hard time finding it, just look for the signs...and menus with her picture on it!More

Have been in Chiang Mai for a few days now and this is definitely one of the best meals I've had. The pork leg rice is famous and for a good reason. Portions are generous and they have a free flow of the salted vegetable...on the table. The egg was amazing! Food arrived quickly which is what really impressed me as they are quite famous and we were prepared to wait. A serving of pork leg rice is 50THB, so very reasonable. I would return again.More

The rice dish here is sooooo delish. Had to order two plates for myself. The pork was really tender and the sauce that they loaded on the rice was mouth watering. Could’ve been a five star but I saw a number of flies buzzing around...some of the cooked eggs that goes with the rice. Not a pleasant scene. *I got here at roughly 4:45pm and there was already a short line of people waiting to buy takeout. There were also customers who were already seated and awaiting their dishes.*More
