Near Ga Hanoi train station and our Mercure Hotel, we stumbled upon La Badiene via Google, but what a stumble it was. After two weeks traveling in Vietnam and sampling the country's fantastic cuisine, we thought we'd try some of the "colonial" cuisine. Atmosphere, service, taste, and attitude wee all superb. We chose the course degustation menu, which included a... More

After 9 days of Vietnamese food for lunch and dinner the family asked if we could eat some other type of food. We found this restaurant in the Lonely Planet and our hotel's concierge confirmed that it was good. It is lovely and set in the inner courtyard of an old building. The decor is calming using almost exclusively black... More

It's ok... but not authentic nor must eat... to be honest. Service is slow. We asked for butter, it came 10min after, and they only gave us a very tiny piece (like a coin size) butter for a hand-sized baguette!! Anyways, I would recommend more for French with Vietnamese flavor if you are visiting to Hanoi.

Dear Michko1, Thank you for your candid review, I am sorry to read that you did not like our food, as many people does. I also would like to appologies for the slowliness of the service you experimented. To be honest our cuisine is not tradionnal french . I would like to thank you for recommending us. Atmosphere were great but that's about it. I supposed it's special simply because it's located in Hanoi... and not because of how amazing the food was. I could certainly tell the chef wanted to make this "fusion" between Western and Asian. But how they've included ginger into the crab sphere (starters) tasted more like an act to disguise how it... This restaurant is in a quaint little back street. The food is great and the setting is classic. I had the scallops and a salmon starter, which I really enjoyed. Well worth a visit.

So good I went three times in a week! Charming service. Pretty room. Best food I had in Hanoi. Would like to have gone for dinner though more expensive although still a snip by Western standards for similar fare.

Wow! We didn't expect to find a gem like La Badiane in the back streets of Hanoi. Both food and service were superb. Servings were ultra generous and staff even sourced an ointment for our child suffering from mozzie bites. The setting of the restaurant was lovely and we enjoyed every mouthful of our four course set meal. Cannot wait... More

My wife & I visited for dinner on the strength of the many strong tripadvisor reviews but left a bit disappointed. We paid around 100 USD for a 4 course set menu with a couple of glasses of house wine and it was comfortably the most expensive meal we had in a two week long trip through Vietnam. Service was... Description
Created in December, 2008, by three French friends, Minh Spielmann, Benjamin Rascalou & Anthony Balenci, La Badiane -French for the Star Anise spice- is heralding its claim to be one of the best restaurants in Vietnam dedicated to fusion of flavors and international gastronomy.

Surrounded by harmonious leaf plants, & walls predominantly white alternating with carefully chosen vivid colors, the place provides for a true feeling of calm and elegance, which gathers the best conditions to let your senses express themselves.

When coming in, an open-sky corridor planted with luxuriant vegetation leads you towards the heart of the restaurant. One’s attention will be instantly caught by the multitude of perfumes & aromas flowing out of the open front kitchen.

Then, depending on your mood & weather permitting, you can have your meal in the airy Patio, calm, convivial & surrounded by photographic art works. For a more intimate setting with warm colors you can choose one of the three air-conditioned rooms located between the ground and the first floor.

At la Badiane, all is about food but there’s also great attention paid to the service and the overall atmosphere, so that we make sure you enjoy every aspect of your meal. La Badiane, top 500 Restaurants in Asia by Miele Guide and “Certificate of Excellence” by Trip Advisor in 3 consecutive years 2012, 2013 and 2014 will never fail to satisfy you. Moreover, at this very same “picky” travel community, there were more than 300 upvotes as “EXCELLENT” for La Badiane – a formidable rating which can only be seen for top-end restaurants.
