What a great find in Cuenca! My husband is Basque and we agreed that the food was very tasty and representative of what you'd find in a Basque restaurant. The decor made us feel as if we were in San Sebastián, tastefully done. Service was excellent. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a break from Ecuadorian food.

This restaurant has a lot of excellent dishes besides the tapas. I have found there hamburgers to among the top 3-4 in my experience in Cuenca. Excellent mustard salsa served on the hamburger and very good French fries. Their chicken cordon blue is also excellent.

I enjoy going to Akelarre for the various delicious tapas that they offer, and the very reasonable cost that they charge. It's a place I will take people for business meals, and also for friendly visits (heck, my business meals are generally quite friendly!). I once hosted a small conference lunch there, too. I enjoy the various tapas, from the... More

A wonderful place for snacks, lunch or dinner, Akelarre has tapas and more! The setting is fantastic in the old colonial style with charming wood beams and frescoed walls. The food is excellent and the prices are reasonable. Conveniently located right in El Centro.

My boyfriend and I ate here two nights in a row, it was that good. Big variety on the menu for very reasonable prices (however, with tapas it can add up quickly). House wine (Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile) was great and $4.50. Quiet atmosphere, quick and friendly service.

Eaten there twice in the last week. The food has been ok- but only just. Both times we were the only people in the restaurant

This place was recommended by our hotel and as we walked by, it started to rain. It was meant to be! We walked in & were seated immediately. Our boys, ages 9 & 11, were thrilled hot chocolate was not only on the menu, but delicious, as it seems to be everywhere in Ecuador. My husband & I enjoyed some... More

We happily stumbled on this place. Attached to a pretty hotel a few blocks from the main square, it's billed as Spanish tapas, but they have other items as well. we enjoyed a local soup then main dishes. My meat "lomo" was delicious. My husband has Chicken Cordon Bleu (not at all Ecuadorian) but he enjoyed it as well. We... More

Visited Akelarre with a group of 4. We ordered the tortilla de patata Espanola, meat & cheese board, garlic shrimp, regular potatoes, and mushroom torte. All were tasty. Akelarre has a good wine list too - we chose a bottle of Malbec. Lovely courtyard seating area made for a great evening!

The food and service here were very good - friendly service and light tapas type fare. Reasonable prices, the atmosphere was not rushed and the variety of tapas was broad enough to give us variety and sharing plates.

Thank you for your opinion. Tapas are really a example of small spanish cuisine , as i come from the basque country , paradise of tapas , we trying to show a little bit of them , working with local ingredients. More
