Amazing place with some great history, and according to the bartenders, occasional ghost sightings. Unbelievably cool replica old town courtyard in rear. Just there for drinks so can't speak to the food, but lots of dining space with upstair balcony dining overlooking the dining area. Incredible old antique signs and decorations. A great travel find!

While making sales calls in the area, the local representative introduced me to John Lau Saloon. It was a totally interesting place...1850s saloon...lumberjack cathouse...haunted...They are famous for their steaks, and our dinner did not disappoint. Add to this attentive service by our waitress. It was a very enjoyable evening.

If you like the old saloon style feel when enjoying a libation, then you must pay a visit to John A Lau. All the dark wood and antique artifacts lying around provide a deep moody atmosphere that I just love. It doesn't hurt the place is noted to be haunted as well.

Great Food, really nice authentically vintage building that is supposed to be haunted, so that's fun. The Food is great as are the entrees. Great for a special dinner or celebration.

Wanted to REALLY like this place, but it is awkward. Not bad, just not WOW. Not many choices in Alpena, this is better than most chains.

I have eaten here several times, and each time it was well worth it. The meals were cooked and served with perfection, and the staff was helpful, friendly and alert. Being an historical landmark ads to the fine ambiance that one experiences while dining.

Great food, we loved it. We both had sandwiches and homemade chips and loved them. Would definitely go back! Portion size was much larger then expected too!

Through a series of events, we ended up at this restaurant and were so glad we did! We had the crab cheese dip appetizer with garlic bread and it was fantastic! I had the salmon and it was delicious...and quite a generous portion! The decor was a bit crazy, but appropriate for a saloon/bar-type atmosphere. The service was just fine.... More
