The building may be old, but the food mixes old and new flare to present some very tasty fare. The desert is amazing and the dining is a great way to socialize with friends before/after a show at the Lyceum Theater.

The stop at this historic landmark is very interesting and over shadows the middle of the road lunch offered. This is a state owned landmark leases out the establishment from year to year/contract to contract, so it's the roll of the dice from season to season.. The norm for many years has been 'family style' of slamming out dry fried... More

Average food, not all homemade. If you eat to live you'll be fine. Good for large groups, families. It's a historic landmark owned by the State.

We went to Arrow Rock due to Google interactive map saying it had quite a few shops and several places to dine. When we arrived, there were only approx. 3 or 4 shops and only 2 open! The only place to eat was at J Huston's. The place is rich in history and looks almost as you would have imagined... More

We were coming to town for an event and we needed to eat, we stumbled upon this place. We walked in were seated, the waitress took our drink order and we were informed no menu that tonight's dinner was family style. It included potatoe salad, coleslaw, biscuits, watermelon slices, fried chicken, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, and green beans. It... More

We have eaten at J Houston Tavern several times. We prefer the homestyle fried chicken dinner. It is reasonable and all-you-can-eat. The Tavern is our preferred stop for meals when we are in Arrowrock attending the Lyceum Theatre. The atmosphere is inviting and the decor is what I would consider "down home, country". Casual attire suits the restaurant well.

The historic J. Huston Tavern is boss a museum and a restaurant. Dinner is very reasonably priced, served family style, and is all you can eat for one price. Drinks and dessert are extra, however. The fried chicken is some of the best I've eaten. The Tavern is also available for group dinner parties during the holidays.

It was hot in there so they seated me smack dab in front of the AC and it was perfect. The curry chicken salad was good. Expect casual dining but it's not a tavern at all...very family and senior friendly!

I'm not a fan of family style, but was willing to give it a chance. In the end that's not what turned me off. It took 45 minutes to get our main course. People who arrived after us were served 15 minutes before us. I don't necessarily blame the server. It appeared she had at least two other larger tables.... More

We made reservations for lunch @ 12:30 before taking in the play at the Lyceum Theater. We were seated on time but as far as our group of 4 was concerned the food was nothing special. It was a buffet and I can't say anything was outstanding. The chicken that was so good when we visited in 2014 was rather... More

Description
The J. Huston Tavern opened under new management in 2013. The tavern has been serving meals to travelers along the Santa Fe Trail since 1834. The brick tavern maintains the flavor of the 1850s, including the original wood floors in the lobby. The tavern is the oldest continuously serving restaurant west of the Mississippi River.Enjoy a drink in The Tap Room, which served as the town mercantile for many years. The three dining rooms serve hearty country fare. The menu features family-style fried chicken, glazed ham, and other traditional dishes. Voted the "Best Fried Chicken in the State," by Rural Missouri Magazine readers in 2011.The lunch menu includes soups, sandwiches, salads and, always, fried chicken. Picnic food items, including fried chicken, are available for carry-out. Call to order.
