We love diners, but classic ones are hard to find, especially ones with good food and accessible hours. Hunter's Dinerant (combo of "diner" and "restaurant") has been around since the actual 1950s - in fact, my in-laws used to go on dates there. The restaurant...was founded by the father of President Biden's first wife, Neilia Hunter (who was tragically killed in a car accident). The diner is an actual rail car that was brought in to balance over an Auburn stream. There is a large jukebox plus jukeboxes on every table - I haven't seen those in forever! We visited on a summer Sunday afternoon around 12:30 pm - surprisingly, there were only a few other patrons. Our server was friendly and attentive. The menu is large and what you'd expect from diner fare, with very reasonable prices given today's inflation. Everything we ordered was excellent! If we lived closer, this would be a frequent stop; even being an hour away, we definitely hope to be back. If you are around Auburn and crave comforting diner food in a classic diner atmosphere, be sure to stop at Hunter's Dinerant!More

We went for breakfast. It was not too busy when we arrived, but filled up by the time we left. We ordered and then waited 45 minutes for our food. When it finally came it was quite good. Prices seemed quite reasonable given the quantity...and quality of the food. The staff made zero effort at masking and social distancing despite signs on the wall requiring masks.More

Stopped in twice, both times this place kicks ass, great, honest food, and honestly, really good coffee, (which for me, rarely happens) but excellent staff and just an all around comfortable place to have a good meal!!!

Stopped in for breakfast. Service was very good. Hot coffee and a smile. Choices were plenty. I did ask for a change to the menu due to dietary needs. Very accommodating. Food was prompt and hot. Price is very good, too. I'll be a weekend...regularMore

Loved it! Nice staff, great menu and food, one of a kind interior. Central to the downtown area, close to the Harriet Tubman museum. Great prices.

My wife liked her liver and onions and it did look good. My chicken, biscuits and gravy over mashed potatoes lacked chicken. No wonder it was so cheap. I love diner's and I probably ordered the wrong dish, but I would not return here.

This is an authentic community diner. The food is delicious--especially the homemade pies. The milkshakes tasty and enormous. The service was solicitous. We enjoyed our dinner at the dinerant.

Before our taste buds were destroyed by "fast food", diners like this were all over America. This one is a classic. The food is great, and the portions are large. When I lived in Auburn (1984 - 1998), I ate there all the time, and...whenever I visit, I always grab a meal here. This place has not changed in 68 years, since it opened in 1951, and that's a good thing; no, its a great thing!More

We had the turkey dinner, which was a lot of food for $10 but very good. It’s not an ironic creative place with a chef, it’s an old school diner with a cook who does basic things. Stick to the classic menu items. Very friendly...and helpful service and not expensive.More

Usually diners have pretty decent food. Since we had had a later lunch we thought we’d go to this diner near our hotel. Plus, the name was funny, a “dinerant“. Don’t be fooled like we were. The food was so salty that we couldn’t eat...it. And there was way too much of it. On the plus side, the waitress was very friendly and the salad was good. Other patrons seemed to enjoy sandwiches and fries, but ended up taking food home. I suggest avoiding this place. It’s just so salty it can’t be healthy.More

Went here twice for breakfast and will return when in the neighborhood. We went to the diner on Memorial day for breakfast and found the typical 50s style diner complete with jukebox selectors at each table. The waitstaff was very friendly and delivered our food...fairly quickly. Breakfast meal was just what we wanted with very good coffee. Hunter's is right on the main drag and parking is easy. Go there!!!More

Probably a great spot in the summer given it’s location. And old converted diner car with a typical diner menu. Friendly staff reasonable prices. Fun to visit glad I stopped.

Hearty and tasty breakfast! My wife says the mushroom soup is the best she's ever had anywhere. The man-sized breakfast is truly wonderful!
