Great, cheap, hole-in-the-wall place in Kyoto. As others have said, the fried chicken is amazing - some of the best we've ever had! Definitely a good choice if you're in the area.

Went here with my sister and we shared the combo (ramen, fried chicken, and rice) for 880 (~$7 usd). There were sides on the table (cabbage, edamame, veggies, etc) that you help yourself to. I'm not a huge fan of ramen so I can't really tell the difference with all of them (and I've been to a few famous ones... More

Exploring little hole in the wall eateries has been one of my favourite parts of travelling Japan and this place was no exception. We ordered the combination which from memory was around 8000yen. It wasn't just about the cheapest Mrs we had over here it was the only one I literally couldn't finish (and I'm a fatty). Rich salty broth... More

Place was full of locals when we arrived and then a group of 11 showed up after a meal. Despite being super busy the two staff were really friendly and happy to help out my wheelchair bound mum getting in. Great vibe, cheapest meal I have found (800 yen set meal was enough for a food coma), and was full... More

The perfect ramen, huge chunks of fried chicken and rice. The restaurant is a typical Japanese experience. Small, homely and good honest food. There was so much food I struggled to finish it! Would recommend and will be going again!

We stumbled upon this place looking for a quick meal and an hour or so out of the oppressive Kyoto summer heat, and someone said they had really good karaage so we had to give it a whirl. It's a bit run down and completely unpretentious, but in over a decade living in Asia, this is the best fried chicken... More

The restaurant is very unpretentious but the food is really nice! We've ordered a Karako combination, ramen, chicken and a bowl of rice... Excellent, straight forward ramen and a 'oily' delicious chicken. All for around 6,00Eur.

We came here with our one and half year old son and we got seated upstairs, sheltered enough to not be embarrassed by the potential noise and tantrums that come with traveling with a toddler. The ramen noodles were delicious and copious and the fried chicken perhaps he best I have eaten in my life.

Karako might as well be called "crack-o," because I've not tasted fried chicken as good as this place makes it anywhere! Take note, deep south of the USA: come to Kyoto to learn how to make proper fried chicken.... Okay, the ramen was awesome too; however, the fried chicken was perfect. Light, crispy, juicy, and bursting with flavor, yet not... More

Excellent, straight forward food at amazing prices. If you are looking for an exquisite dining experience, this isn't it. But if you are looking for great food served in unpretentious surroundings, then go enjoy.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
