Shigetsu is a restaurant that serves shojin-ryori (Buddhist cuisine) within the grounds of Tenryu-ji. So you'll have to pay admission to the garden in order to eat at Shigetsu but in return for that you get some amazing views. Buddhist cuisine is vegan, so no animal products are used at all. This may deter some people but actually the meal... More

In the grounds of the Zen Buddhist Temple of the heavenly dragon (Tenryuji) in Arashiyama I had a very special dining experience. Their vegetarian restaurant Shigetsu had the most artistically presented and tasty collection of dishes for their set lunch menu. The one thing that most impressed me though, was the care taken to make the humble soybean the centrepiece... More

Inside the grounds of Tenryuji temple in Arashimaya, is this zen restaurant which serves a sublime vegetarian zen banquet. I strongly recommend booking in advance and reserving one of the small private rooms which overlook the koi pond. We were the only people in the tatami room so felt very special. The food was amazing, and for an unforgettable experience,... More

This restaurant is located inside the Tenryuji temple area and you would need to purchase a entrance ticket in order to enter into the restaurant. The restaurant served authentic Buddhist meal and it is 100% vegetarian and you are advised to make an advance reservation as this restaurant is quite packed with guests and the restaurant will need you to... After a long walk in the temple viewing the gorgeous maple leave, we tried to find a place for lunch . There was a building caught my eyes . Later in we found out it served vegetarian dish . Well! Gave it a trial! After we walked inside the building, we were attracted by the environment . There were several... More

Shigetsu needs reservation because the restaurant is sought after. But it is worth the trouble. For reservation you find the phone number in the record. The seating is not what you would expect from a ordinary restaurant rather you sit in a row side by side in the traditional Japanese way. The food is extremely delicious and you get a... More

Shigetsu is well known for its zen vegetarian meals. In its website it says the 2016 Michelin Guide for Osaka and Kyoto has designated Tenryu-ji's Shigetsu Zen Vegetarian Restaurant a "Bib Gourmand" -- a restaurant serving "exceptionally good food at moderate prices." We had a set lunch for about $30 which came with 5 dishes. It was enjoyable but in... More

We read about Buddhist or temple meals as we were preparing for our trip and this was a great place to give it a try! Right on our trail for the morning visiting temples in Arashiyama, we arrived around noon on a Saturday and were seated right away (though they did ask if we had a reservation). As others mention,... Tasty was so so. But the experience of traditional temple food was so impressible. And the location was so beautiful, in the garden of Denryuji.

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
