I have to say it is not bad, but maybe not so excellent as you think. And two people cost almost 5,000.

Pretty good unagi place. Found it via the Bib Gourmand and went for a relatively early dinner one evening. There was no wait and the restaurant is relatively large. There is an English menu, which always nice. We ordered the large unagi don with the tamago on top, 2 chawanmushis, eel wrapped around burdock root and the unagi sushi. All... More

I was expecting an experience of top grade unagi to be served at this restaurant, based on the reviews and ratings on TripAdvisor of this restaurant but was sorely disappointed. I have eaten better grade unagi at other restaurants. The quality of rice that was served with the unagi was also of lower grade. I must say that even the... More

From my research in internet, the comment from local Japanese on this restaurant was above average, so I decided to try it. If I compared the eel rice with what I could have in Hong Kong, that was good. However, when I compared that with Japanese standard, there was no "Wow" in my head. The price was kinda expensive too.... More

So my husband wanted to eat here because it was recommended on the lonely planet. I think there may be a local menu because they appeared to be getting a different one than what we got. The price was high for what we got and we don't mind paying a lot for quality food. The food was good, but not... More

The restaurant has a very old traditional feel. The unagi rice was deliciously hot. Remeber to ask for the egg topping which was soft and fluffy omelette. Simply heavenly.

Kaneyo is probably one of the oldest Unagi (broiled eel) restaurants in Kyoto. The restaurant is apparently old-fashioned, but their eels taste good. This is maybe the most important thing! For lunch time, I recommend you to order Kaneyo-Don, eel on the top of boiled rice. You can get a large portion of rice (Gohan Omori) for no extra charge.

The grilled eel was tasty, though the portion was a little miserly given the price. I also had the carp sashimi which was surprisingly tasty, and the eel liver soup, which was akin to a weak clear fish broth. Lots of great eel restaurants in Japan, Kyogoku Kaneyo is not one of them.
