Not a big fan of chuka ramen, more of a tonkotsu guy. But would not hesitate to eat here again. Super flavorful shoyu base ramen. Don't forget to try the kuro chahan (black fried rice)also, it's so good!

This ramen shop is one of the most famous ramen shops in Kyoto, which is located near to the JR Kyoto station. It’s about ten minutes walk from the JR Kyoto station. The soup is based on soy source, I think. Then, the soup color looks black, but that is tasty soup. Chinese fried rice is also based on the... More

Officially not a fan of shinpuku saikan. Seeing that the place next door where my husband had a great meal a few nights before was closed, we decided to give shinpuku saikan a go. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Small place but jam packed with tables. They took our order while we were in line, so by the... More

Great place for Ramen, about 15 mins of walking from Kyoto Station. The broth is unique, even though it is black, don’t let it deter you. The soup is not too thick, but it has a wonderful flavor to it. The soup is a little salty for my liking, but if you eat it together with the ramen and the... More

We got the ramen as well as the fried rice (both were really good). Its quite a special flavor and might not be for everyone. Big minus for the cleanliness of the place.

Never eaten ramen like this before. Soup color is dark but taste just fair. We waited in the line for 30 minutes. Worth a wait but it's not a place where eat slow.

Here is very famous ramen restaurant located around Kyoto station. My friends recommended it us. We ordered normal ramen. It was surprising for us, because The color of soup, based on chicken, was black, but taste was light and refreshing, so it was good. It is very unique ramen.

Feel like a hearty bowl of Ramen after a hard day exploring Kyoto?! Then look no further. We went here based on the recommendation of a friend from Kyoto and were very happy to have experienced the place. No queues when we arrived but leading down the street by the time we left, we enjoyed two large bowls of ramen... More

We arrived to a long line of business men lining up around the block. There are 5 noodle choices on the menu and a few others without noodles. We ordered while still in line and got a seat as soon as two freed up inside. Like a "beer hall" we sat at a table with other diners. The food was... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
