We really can't recommend Hyotei. Perhaps resting on its laurels? Try breakfast, if you must go. Perhaps the worst value (quality/cost) of any restaurant we have been to in the world. See the other 3 star reviews. Really, go somewhere else in Kyoto.

Traditional breakfast served for 4500 yen per person. While expensive, it was absolutely amazing and far less than what you would be expected to pay for lunch or dinner. Service was fast and not many people there at 8am on a Friday.

We booked through our hotel for our 'significant' birthdays. In Sydney you don't get Michelin starred restaurants so we were very keen to try this one. What can I say: as soon as we stepped through the doors and into our private dining room we were transported 400 years back and it was magic (though very glad they had a... More

I have enjoyed the very special breakfast served at Hyotei on numerous occasions. I have also long since felt that the food in the 3 Michelin starred establishments in Kyoto lack excitement. A dinner at Chihana a few months ago was a distinct let down. Whilst this kaiseki lunch at Hyotei was not as much of a disappointment, it nevertheless... More

The beauty of the place and the food is unquestionable, as is the service, but I'm not sure if the food is as good as it can be in Kyoto give the price. Would have liked to have tried another kaiseki restaurant to give a true comparison.

My female friends and I were looking for a traditional kaiseki experience and Hyotei was given a 3 star Michelin rating. My friends and I could speak some Japanese as our hostesses had very limited English - they were older ladies with the cool polite, respectful Japanese demeanor which warmed when we tried to speak to them in Japanese. The... More

We had kaiseki lunch at Hyoteihonten today. We love the food. It was beautiful, fragrant and tastes exquisite; right down to miso soup. The environment was amazing and staff were top notch. I deeply respect their hard work but it was difficult to show my gratitude as I speak little Japanese. It is an expensive fine dining experience but I... More

We could only come here for breakfast because we have two young children (they only allow children under the age of 10 at breakfast). The food here is excellent, every dish was really good and we enjoyed it so much. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip. The price for breakfast is, in our opinion, quite reasonable.

I woke up early in the morning and made my way to try out Hyotei's morning porridge at the annex. I did not make any reservation but lucky for me they have a table for me. There were two main courses. First up was an array of side dishes which included various pickled vegetables and their famous hyotei egg. After... More

Absolutely not a three star. We had kaiseki dinner for two in October. Food was completely unmemorable. The place was cold and no heaters available. Service fine but you could not expect less in Kyoto, however the staff spoke basically no english so you would not get any additional explanation or information. The only thing three star was the price.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
