We have tried almost ALL the 3 star Michelin restaurant within Kyoto, and I would say this disappoints the most. They lack the majestic presentation and the pomp of Nakamura, artistic tea ceremony traits of Kichisen, and lacks the technique of Chihana. They probably have...More

Great location. Great service and good food. Just wouldn't call this a 3 michelin star restaurant (luckily i've been to a couple....and this doesn't match up to those experiences.). So when the check comes and it charges michelin star levels....then your review of the place...More

Tonight is the last of our Michelin 3-star trip in Kyoto and Osaka . We are at Hyotei , a restaurant providing Kaiseki cuisine . We will be hard to be impressed as we visited two exquisite ones in the past two days . The...More

I am pretty sure that they got their 3Michelin stars from the environment of the restaraunt because I cant see what else would have gotten them this high rating. The food was disappointing with sub-par quality. Examples are the yellowtail sashimi we got was chewy...More

Maybe it is a cultural divide but my wife and I did not enjoy our dinner at Hyotei at all. We had multiple occasions to have very fine Japanese dinners during our stay in Japan, Hyotei was not one of them. Yes, it is very...More

My 22-year old son and I were so looking forward to dining at Hyotei. About 3-1/2 years ago we had gone to Kikunoi (main location in Kyoto) along with other members of our family. Both Hyotei and Kikunoi are 3-star Michelin-rated. Since we were truly...More

Shinise establishment. Dine like old-time samurai .... "eating off the tatami floor". Wonderful experience. The menu, simple & traditional. Not breathtaking. Sengi-kori.

We really can't recommend Hyotei. Perhaps resting on its laurels? Try breakfast, if you must go. Perhaps the worst value (quality/cost) of any restaurant we have been to in the world. See the other 3 star reviews. Really, go somewhere else in Kyoto.

Traditional breakfast served for 4500 yen per person. While expensive, it was absolutely amazing and far less than what you would be expected to pay for lunch or dinner. Service was fast and not many people there at 8am on a Friday.

City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its
blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered
shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street
bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to
peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home
goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center
is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and
clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of
