Karyo is delicious. The food is creative and dynamic. If you read any reviews complaining about the atmosphere - don't pay attention. The ambience is nice but the focus is just on the food - evident by the open kitchen. Be prepared to experience 30 separate dishes, each with completely different flavors in a single night. Highly recommended. Anyone who... More

Like some others, I came here expecting a wonderful Kaiseki experience, based on the recommendation of my hotel. And like some others, I didn't even finish the (expensive) meal. The service was supposed to be impeccable, but from the start it was made clear that I was unwelcome. The dishes were tossed in front of me. They were shoving food... More

After a reasonably good meal, they refused my AmEx Centurion card and managed to make us feel like criminals. Destroyed my evening, destroyed my night. These people should not be allowed to claim they accept American Express. Clearly my worst overall experience in Japan in over 20 years. They should be ashamed. Thank you very much.

This restaurant have limited seating available and you must make an advance reservation. This restaurant served only kaiseki cuisine and there is only 1 menu available for lunch and 1 menu for dinner. Staffs are very friendly, helpful and speaks pretty good English. Every dish will be explained in a very detail manner. Food quality is good and the restaurant... More

I came to Kyoto with my girlfriends to have a fantastic reunion. Our host suggested a very well-known restaurant, so i made a Reservation. The food was disappointing, the service was unsatisfactory and the craziness was unacceptable. Please come here if you want a rude and disgusting experience. At the end, we felt angry because they were rude and we... More

Located near the Giesha theatre and inside a traditional Japanese house, the resturant provide a great introduction to kaeseki (which is a mulitcourse degustation with a unique Kyoto style cooking). The traditional style of cooking has a twist of modern flourishes through seasonal flavours. Make sure you book in advance as there is limited seating. You can book online and... More

Well first make sure you book in advance. You will be getting the course meal of the day so it might be different from the pictures you see here in tripadvisor. It is fun to watch the chefs make your meal infront of you. They also bring the food out to you and explain about the meal. Their english is... More

Located in the heart of Gion district amongst quaint Edo era buildings, Karyo serves kaiseki or traditional Japanese multi course meals. We had a 10 course set dinner for about $100 per pax. Certainly not cheap but we were treated to a visual and gastronomical delight. Each course was beautifully presented and there were many oooos and ahhhhhs from our... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
