Everything about this restaurant is amazing, and I ate here as often as I could while in Kyoto. The atmosphere is cozy, and the owners are extremely friendly (they were willing to accommodate our group of 5 despite the small size of their restaurant). They don't speak a word of english (but they did have a menu in english, which... More

This restaurant is great! The food is delicious and inexpensive. They have a menu in English for foreigners and they have a lot of options, including rice dishes, fried chicken, and the especially good udon noodles. The owners are extremely friendly and will take good care of you- they were very welcoming to a group of weary non-Japanese-speaking travelers who... More

My friends and I stumbled into this place by accident on a two week trip to Japan. Boy, are we glad we did. Everything we had in this restaurant was great! The food was cheap and the portion sizes were huge. The old couple running the place was extremely nice and very excited to have foreign visitors. The menu was... More

My friends and I visited this restaurant on a 2 week trip to Japan, and their Nabeyaki Udon was one of the best meals we've had. The elderly couple running the restaurant are very nice, and they were very excited to have foreigners visit. They taught us a little Japanese, and asked us about the New York Yankees and California... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
